OnlineAutorama Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Hmm,... Well something weird happened. I'm unable to delete the folder name 05_dodge_dakota located at public_html/webmember/05_dodge_dakota The folder was created as an account for myself that was just installed for automotive people to create their own free automotive website. Going thru the admin section testing it out I wanted to delete the account to see how that process happens, while deleting it i received an error saying "User's Homepage was unsuccessfully deleted due to an internal server error, the folder '/05_dodge_dakota' should be manually deleted." I thought hmm,.. weird. So then i opened WS_FTP and tried to delete it and got an error 550: 05_dodge_dakota: Directory not empty. I thought that never stopped me before from deleting folders so i checked the settings and they are fine, I even created a new folder, copied junk into it and even made a sub-folder and was able to delete it. I thought Hmm,.. weird so then i thought oh yeah i know of a way to delete it for sure so then i tried File Manager. When i click the folder link then click on Delete this folder and all files under it but the folder never shows up under the trash can but the icon for the trash car has changed so i clicked the trash can anyway, it acted like it emptyed it but yet the folder still remained. There's another folder named dodger05 which is a second account that i made which i tried to delete as well and it cannot be deleted either. Can you please try to delete the directory / folder on yourside of the sever. I need 05_dodge_dakota and dodger05 deleted. They are located inside of the webmember directory. Does anyone know why this is happening? I've got a email into the person who did the install for me to see if maybe they know why this might be happening. But why can't File Manager delete those 2 folders? Thank You. Jim. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 If that directory was created by a script then most likely it belongs to the user nobody. You will have to submit a ticket to the help desk to have them change ownership of the file or delete it for you. Quote

I've never had this problem deleting accounts in coppermine or vbulletin or other scripts i've tried as demos to see if i liked it or not. Why would it say because of a internal sever error and delete it manually if it couldnt be deleted without having to "change ownership of the file" or myself having to go thru all of the steps of having to contact my hosting service to simply delete a folder? Where have you seen or learned about the information or anything about something like this belonging to a user nobody? I'd like to read about this info to better educate myself on this term. Thank you for your help. Jim. Quote

stevevan Posted June 15, 2005 Posted June 15, 2005 Strange that this should have happened, but the best (and quickest) way to go is via the help desk. (Speaking from experience here!) Quote
TweezerMan Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 I'll usually try changing the directory permissions to 0777. If successful, I can then delete all of the files in the directory, then delete the directory if I wish. Quote

Why would it say because of a internal sever error and delete it manually if it couldnt be deleted without having to "change ownership of the file" or myself having to go thru all of the steps of having to contact my hosting service to simply delete a folder? Hi Jim, Everyone on a server who has an account can own files and every file is owned by an account. There are "special" users as well - root who can do anything, nobody who is a "fake" person, etc. If you put a script on your account that, say, deletes all files, and you own it, then when it gets run the computer assumes it is running with your permissions and will delete your files because "you" told it to. Nobody is an account set up to protect you so that when the script says to delete things and it is owned by "nobody", then it is "nobody" that is telling it to delete Autorama's files and the computer tells it "Sorry! Can't do that!" If the script had a problem and tried to delete everything (undo the install for ex) then it ran into a snag it would tell you that you have to do it yourself. Hope it helps! Quote
Head Guru Posted June 16, 2005 Posted June 16, 2005 Nice replies. If you still need help, just raise a Help Desk ticket and we can take a look at this for you. Quote
OnlineAutorama Posted June 16, 2005 Author Posted June 16, 2005 Well yeah the problem is still happening. It's 3:59am right now so i'll submit a ticket when i get up. I submitted a ticket to delete the 2 folders and refered to this topic here all i got was an email back saying that the folders were deleted if there was anything else i needed to let them know. i wrote back, Thank you. But anyway yeah. I still havent heard back from the seller/install yet after like 6 emails about different question. i hope he writes back soon. Okay,.. night guys and gals. Question. for a quick response back after i submit a ticket, what should i say in the ticket so that the person who gets it fully understands what i'm asking them? Because i'm not really sure what the problem is other then not beable to delete some folders using File Manager. Thank you again Jim. Quote

As long as you fully explain what you need done or the problem you are having, they will respond in their usual TCH-quick manner. If they need more information, they'll respond on the ticket. Be sure you check your email inbox. For others who are following this thread, the help desk is the way to go for server-specific issues. Quote
