i am attempting to install a IRC web client on my web. i have done a little research and i have found two that seem to be good.(don’t know never used any of them)

http://cgiirc.sourceforge.net/

http://www.xchat.org

i have attempt to install the cgiirc but i get internal server error. :D

Does anyone know how to install any one of these correctly? Or does anyone know of a good(and easy to install) IRC client for my web?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

I looked at the cgiirc script and got it to run but it never would connect to a server.

This section in the Readme concerns me, however.

Generally if you pay your host enough they will let you run CGI:IRC, but beware

it does use a lot of memory because each user uses a web server process and a

perl process. This is due to the stream based nature and the fact most

webservers are designed to serve static content.

Since we are on shared hosting, it seems to me that there would be the danger of this type of program using a lot of CPU cycles. You might want to check with the admins before installing.

Right from the AUP...

Internet Relay Chat

You may not use IRC scripts or programs that interfere with or deny service to other users on any other server, host, network or channel.

I think that is referring more towards shells used for eggdrop bots and the like rather than a irc client. I could be wrong though.

I gave up trying to find an irc script that worked the way i wanted so i just did this.

Created and registered a channel on whatever irc server I wanted, then added this link in my navigation

irc://irc.us.gamesnet.net:6667/xtrememodz

It requires that the person wanting to chat have an irc client installed on their local system, but it works better than most scripts i have tried.

If you insist on using a script jirc works well www.jpilot.com but you have to pay for it.

ok, i see this is from a long time ago, but im trying to do the same thing, installing cgiirc, and i kinda have it working but i always get a connection time out. so im guessing that TCH doesnt allow me to run this program, or do i still need to keep trying to mess around with the configuration?

As section31 pointed previously, (I think) that statement from the AUP prevents you from using any type of IRC scripts, not just eggdrops or other type of IRC robots.

But I'll check that for you and let you know.

From the Acceptable Use Terms doc.

Internet Relay Chat

You may not use IRC scripts or programs that interfere with or deny service to other users on any other server, host, network or channel

IRC BOTS ARE PROHIBITED

You may not engage in activities which harass other users. This includes, but is not limited to, "flooding" (rapidly entering text with the intent to disrupt service), "flashing" (disrupting terminal emulation), "takeovers" (improper seizing and abuse of operator privileges), attempting to send private messages to those who do not wish to receive them, attempting to return to a channel after being banned from it, and other disruptive behaviors.

You may not attempt to impersonate other users. The use of nicknames does not constitute impersonation. You may run "clones" (multiple simultaneous IRC connections) and "robots" only as permitted by the host IRC server.

Now this script is not an IRC BOT but you may want to pay special attention to TCH-Rick's post above.
