ramone_kalsaw Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 I'm in the process of shopping for a DSL ISP. I'm moving my office and currently I'm using cable which isn't available at my new local, so I'm going to use DSL. I'm hoping to get your feedback regarding parsing out the differences between Qwest (the phone company), and the boutique ISP's like Speakeasy and SoundDSL. My preliminary research shows that Qwest is the least cost option with "phone company" type support. I've been reading reviews on http://www.dslreports.com/ and Qwest seems to be 'acceptable/average' to many reviewers. On the other hand Speakeasy and SoundDSL taut their fiber connections to multiple backbones and their excellent technical support - and of course they charge more for their service. I was wondering how other TCH members go about balancing out these two ends of the ISP spectrum, and decide which type of DSL ISP to go with. Thanks for any feedback you can offer! Quote
Head Guru Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 I HIGHLY suggest using SpeakEasy. They have pops nationwide. I have used their service and they are excellent! Bill Quote
stevevan Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 While the provider I use is pretty regional, the website you mentioned above is an EXCELLENT resource of information. I used it extensively before I made the plunge and still use it from time to time. And to second what Bill said, I have heard many positive comments about SpeakEasy. Quote

My only experience directly with Qwest is when I had a T1 with them several years ago, but I can only categorize that support experience as "horrific". However, being several years ago, that could have changed by now. Quote
Head Guru Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 At my last place of residence, I used speakeasy for nearly 3 years. The uptime was excellent and I got very low latency 99.999% of the time. Support was excellent as well. Heck, they even sent me this really cool Beer Can Holder and Cooler when I signed up. Bill Quote
Head Guru Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 One last comment. I now have SBC/Yahoo DSL. The service itself has been very very good. I have only contacted support twice. Each time they made me reboot my pc and router several times and finally I told the tech to forget it and would just wait for the service to come back up. Each time it came back within a few moments. Where I live now I am 30 feet from a Remote Terminal. So from the RT to the CO is all Fiber. SBC ran a special for a very short time. I signed up and got 6mbps/608kbps for $49 a month. Never looked back. Bill Quote
youneverknow Posted January 18, 2005 Posted January 18, 2005 Where I live now I am 30 feet from a Remote Terminal. Is that terminal in your garage? Quote
