tamda Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 Hi All, I have gotten some great advice in the TCH forum so here goes another questions. Does anyone know how to create a shortcut to an URL so it will open in its own browser instead of "take over" an existing browser that has already been opened? To clearify further with an example, - you have an opened browser pointed to Google - you then want to click on a shortcut to TCH but in its own browser while Google stays open. Note: The whole point is not to use Favorites. btw...the O/S is Windows XP. Thanks. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 Please clarify further. Create a link on a web page to open in another broswer window? Create a link on your desktop to open in another browser window? Or click a link in Google or any other web page and have it open a new browser window? Quote
TCH-Rob Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 Right-click the link and select open in a new window. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 If you are wanting a shortcut on your desktop, just right click on the desktop and select New > Shortcut from the context menu. This will open the shortcut wizard, enter the url and name then finish. Quote
tamda Posted December 14, 2004 Author Posted December 14, 2004 Bruce, I want to create a short cut on the desktop that points to a website. It should open a new browser window if I double-click on it instead of I have already tried TCH-Dick's method but if you double-click on that short cut, it will "occupy" an existing browser that is already opened. Microsoft's recommendation is to open the My Network Places and select "Add a network place" wizard but it requires a destination share. Eventhough it said you can input a website address, it doesn't accept it. Thanks. Quote
TCH-Dick Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 Instead of just the url, you can use >"C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe" http://www.totalchoicehosting.com Quote
Samrc Posted December 14, 2004 Posted December 14, 2004 I have already tried TCH-Dick's method but if you double-click on that short cut, it will "occupy" an existing browser that is already opened. Sounds like you have your Internet Explorer set to reuse the same window over and over. You can change that setting so that every shortcut opens in a new window. Open Internet Explorer From the Menubar at the top, Choose TOOLS Choose Internet Options Choose Advanced Tab Scroll down to BROWSING section UNCHECK the box for Reuse windows for launching shortcuts Click APPLY, OK Now when you double click shortcuts, they open new browser windows each time! -Samantha Quote
tamda Posted December 14, 2004 Author Posted December 14, 2004 Dick, You're the man....it works. Thanks! Quote

However, if you have multiple browsers on your machine, you need to make this change on all browsers. Otherwise, it will "occupy" another opened browser. -Dave Quote
