ace Posted November 30, 2004 Posted November 30, 2004 Hello I have a 17" Dell monitor (CRT) that sometimes makes a high pitched sound. It starts and stops on its own or if I turn the monitor off and on again it is gone. Usual lasts just a few seconds but has lasted up to 30 seconds. Any idea what mabe happening? It sometimes happens when a monitor is running at an odd refresh rate -- though with an intermittent noise, I'm not sure if that would necessarily explain it. I'd recommend adjusting your resolution and/or refresh rate (via, I think, the adapter tab on your display preferences) and see if it makes any difference. Quote

As Microsoft says, you may damage the monitor (hardware) by setting an unsupported refresh rate. Make sure your monitor can handle the rate you desire to set it to before doing it. With that said, I did read somewhere that setting it to the highest supported rate will reduce the chance for noise. Quote

It was making this weird squeely noise on startup. I adjusted the refresh rate and that worked. The refresh was set at 85 and I changed it to 75. So for dell monitors anyway, I guess that's the highest rate supported. Thanks for the good info! I know the 2405fpw has a history of whining problems especially when they get too warm, but I don't really know the history on the Dell 17" monitors. (fortunately, my 2405fpw that I've had for 6-7 months is very quiet, but it is in a well ventilated area too). Quote

Heat DOES affect the operation of it, but not as severely as a bad refresh rate. It affects a device in the monitor called the flyback (i think...I can picture it, but i don't remember if that's the right name or not! ). That's why they have the warning about refresh rates. Good catch! You're right. It's a flyback transformer. My previous CRT monitor also had this problem. I was uncertain whether it was the refresh rate or the resolution. It only squeaked at 640x480 but not 800x600 nor 1024x768. Sometimes a whack would fix it. Quote
