I have played with both boards and personally use Invision. It has some features built-in such as the calendar that I like and I prefer the administration module for it. I have used other Invision Boards so that led me to try it. Head Guru also has said that Invision uses fewer system resources. You can install both and see what you think. PhpBB has more themes or skins available if that is an issue for you.

I have used both, I was using phpbb before I switched to invision board which I like a lot better because it has way more features, better admin options and you can get lots of skins for them, you just gotta look a little harder for them but it is worth it

Ok, this is my first post after joining the TotalChoice family! First I would like to say I'm happier than I've ever been with other hosting companies and it's been only 2 days!

More to the point, I have just set up the PHPbb and am getting ready to set up Invision to play around with. I've never set up or admin'd a board before so PHPbb came as a big shock for the ease of use. Thanks for making the install a snap. My question is, and this may be a bit off topic, has anyone used WoltLabBB before? I've used it quite a bit from the user's perspective and have grown to like the interface. If anyone has used it, how does the admin side compare to Phpbb and Invision?

I also prefer IPB (Invision Power Board) for the same reasons already stated here.

I'd prefer phpBB because it's Free Software (or Open Source, if you prefer) but IPB does have much more and much better features than phpBB.

phpBB does have loads of add-ons and skins but IPB is not very far from it:

As for WBB (WoltLab Burning Board - http://woltlab.info), that's one of the finest bulletin board softwares available, the other one being vBulltin (http://vbulletin.com).

The problem is they're both commercial.

Just a little note for those of you who'll say that IPB is "free, just like phpBB":

Invision Board is NOT free nor is it Free Software. Actually, they state that pretty clearly in their license:

Important: Invision Power Board is NOT an open source software product. You must follow the limitations in this software agreement. We offer specific permission to customise the code for your own needs later in this agreement.

I won't get into details as this could generate some confusion. Just remember that "Free Software" doesn't mean that you don't have to pay anything for it, it means that you're free to do with it whatever you like (to some extent, of course).
