musicfrisk Posted March 17, 2003 Posted March 17, 2003 Bill - I think you owe it to everyone to e-mail EVERYONE asking them to remove the frequent checks, many users explained valid reasons for needing this. For example, if I had not checked the board, I would not know this was beign discussed, I bet the majority of the 1 second crowd still don't, said a different way how can people take action to reduce to the new 30 second standard if you don't tell them? Why don't you try doing something simpler first and ask people to reduce the strain on the server by having the people who have no idea this discussion is taking place - like almost all users - requested to reduce the frequency of checks via e-mail. If you don't approach the abusers and impair the other users, that is just foolish and silly. I think you are much smarter than this bill, which is why I ask ask you to send a global e-mail to all clients askign them to reduce the freqeuncy, thank you. If you want to remain a customer focused organization, you should listen to the good users. Thanks again. btw...one more arguement against the chat suggestion...don't chat programs put more strain on a server than e-mail at 5-10 seconds...I've been told so by some people. Quote
Head Guru Posted March 17, 2003 Posted March 17, 2003 The topic was closed! If you WOULD have read the last reply, we have placed this on hold for ten days. At the end of the hold period I will look at pop3 usage and make a choice at that point. I dont email users at will, email is private and personal, and I dont abuse this. Every user is told in the welcome email to check the user forums that this is a good place for news on TCH. What will happen is we will look at server loads in the next ten days, if they are still high, we will place the limits on the servers. The users will be notified via this board. It will be added to the TOS and AUP and we will see what happens. Quote
TCH-Andy Posted March 17, 2003 Posted March 17, 2003 Bill, just though't I'd add a comment before you close the topic. I have very little problem with the need to stop POP3 floods. However I joined TCH because of the very helpful community, that listened to the users and worked together to find solutions, closing the topics goes against the grain of that to me. just my $0.02 worth Andy Quote
Head Guru Posted March 17, 2003 Posted March 17, 2003 Lets not start a boxing match. If i did not listen to users I would have implemented the change five days ago. Just sit back and wait, things always work out. I will close a thread only if I feel the thread is going no where. I really dont like users telling me and I qoute "it is completely unacceptable." or "you would suggest something so laughable." or how about this one "one of the selling attributes here is community! I hope we don't lose sight of that -- it would be a shame." There are times to listen and times to run the biz, this is one of the latter times. This is about choice, not about making one user happy. Of course I want to please the masses. Look thru all the FIVE THOUSAND postings in this board and tell me how many you find closed? I just did and guess what.... There was one. If that is not community, then I dont know what is. Quote
TCH-Andy Posted March 18, 2003 Posted March 18, 2003 Bill, Thanks for the reply. I have no wish to start a boxing match & apologies if my comments came across as such. I agree 100% with everything you have just said, and if I were you I wouldnt like to be told that your suggestions were "completely unacceptable." either. It is often even more difficult when we are relying on text only and don't get the body language that goes with these messages, despite the Icons . It's a great place to be, and just occasionally a few of us say something we didn't mean to come out the way that it does it in the cold light of day - far to often in my case So please don't be upset when I suggest that the way I read your first messages on closing the thread were harsher than you may have intended - blame it on my reading Overall, TCH does ROCK, As I said before, I have no problem at all with you trying to stop POP3 floods - I'd positively support it, I was commenting on my reading of the posts in the thread. Thanks again, and from my viewpoint, the issues closed Andy Quote
Head Guru Posted March 18, 2003 Posted March 18, 2003 Awwww thanks.... I wuv my big family of gurus.... Quote
nolageek Posted April 1, 2003 Posted April 1, 2003 My 2 cents: We may only be allowed to check email 15 times an hour, but we'll be able to send 1000+ e-mails an hour? That sounds awefully backwards to me. While I understand you run a business, so do many of us... I didn't appreciate the "You'll get you 15 e-mail checks an hour and you'll like it" attitute it implied. I still wuv you guys, but I'm glad I dont use this account as my primary e-mail.
