I've played with Mambo and Xoops. Of the 2, Xoops was much better. I just wish I could find a good use for it.

I have a php page that loads as a blank page. How can I re-enable my php errors so that I can see what the problem is?

Why are tables such a bad thing? I spent a lot of time trying to learn table-less design using CSS, and in the end I had to find a compromise. Until CSS is more consistent between browsers, why waste so much time trying to completely elimnate tables? After all, they work perfectly for what I need them to do - and they work consistently between broswers. I guess don't really understand this whole "table-less design" debate. Now I agree that table design can be abused (ie. MS Frontpage), but again I ask - Why are tables such a bad thing?

I have been using Avant Browser since I first heard about it on the TCH forums. I am very happy with it. They are continually improving it, which is also a plus. You can even make suggestions on the discussion forums on their web site. Check it out!

this has got to be my favorite so far

OK, crisis averted! I figured it out. What I didn't know was that when you extract a backup it puts it in a separate folder in the home directory. All I had to do was copy the htaccess file from the backup gallery folder to the 'live" gallery folder and PRESTO! all is well again. Boy am I glad to be done with Frontpage! I have been slowly migrating away from it for the last month or so because it was just so limiting and strange behaving. It wanted to control every little aspect of my site! So if anyone is going to uninstall their Frontpage extensions, learn from my lesson. Make sure you have a backup first, and watch out for htaccess problems. I think there is even a warning before you do it. Just be careful. - Chad

I currently don't even have an .htaccess file in my Gallery directory. All I have is .htaccess.1056111626. Is that the same thing? I don't understand that because my backup shows a .htaccess file for the gallery directory. Why would it not have installed with the backup restore?

My site was working just fine yesterday. I had everything just how I wanted it, and I made a backup. Since I had the backup, today I went in to uninstall Frontpage Extensions since FP has been nothing but a problem ever since I started using it. After I uninstalled the FP extensions, everything worked except my Gallery photo albums. I can get to the Gallery main page, but when I click on a photo album I get the dreaded "The Page Cannot Be Found" error. So then I calmly restored my backup and it still does the same thing! I am a little freaked out here because I've put a lot of time into the gallery and I was careful to get a backup before I did anything like that. As far as I can tell, all the files are there. I'm wondering if my HTACCESS file could be the problem, because the hyperlink for each album points to a subdirectory under the Gallery directory that does not exist. If anyone has any insight on this problem that could help I would greatly appreciate it. I'm dreading having to go back and do it all over again. - Chad

My disk and bandwidth usage do not appear to be updating on my CPanel. Do I need to open a service ticket for this? - Chad

Thanks for the help. I ended up using the variable method, since I could never get $PHP_SELF to work consistently. I was trying to avoid having to go into each file to assign a variable, but at least my site is not TOO big so it didn't take that long. In case you're wondering, I was just trying to code my own site navigation link bar, which would change the look of the link for the current page. I'm sure there are some great scripts out there that already do this, but I've been enjoying learning PHP (and CSS) by doing my own coding. Although I'm not quite ready yet to write my own photo gallery script - GALLERY already performs magnificently for this! I sure don't miss FrontPage!!! - Chad

I'll post some of the code later, if I have time. But where I'm running into trouble is using Gallery. Gallery is located in a subfolder (/gallery). In /gallery, index.php includes albums.php, which includes gallery.header (located in /gallery/html_wrap), which is where I am including my header.php (located in /). It works just fine, but when I use $PHP_SELF in header.php, it always returns "/header.php" from the gallery index page. - Chad

When it works, I'm including the header (/header.php) from a file in the root directory. When it doesn't work, I'm including the header from another included file located in a subdirectory. In the latter case, $PHP_SELF always returns "/header.php". Is the subnesting my problem, or is it because of the file location? - Chad

I am trying to find a way to assign to a variable the root file name from within a PHP included file. I use a header file (header.php) for all pages on my site. I want to assign a variable in header.php to refer to the file that actually included it (ie. /index.php, /feedback.php, etc). When I use $PHP_SELF or $REQUEST_URI, I do not always get the correct file name. These only work for files that are located in my public_html folder. Does this make sense? - Chad

I have not been using passive mode. I'll try it out and see how it goes. - Chad

I have been having the same types of problems with WSFTP. I don't have a whole lot of FTP experience, so I wasn't sure how normal it was. But it sure is annoying having to re-connect so frequently. Could it be a WS-FTP problem? - Chad

That is very cool! I was just getting ready to install it.

I just installed gallery, and I successfully logged in with "admin" and the password I entered during install. I only had one problem, but I don't think it's too important. I got the following error during install: - Chad

I'm not too crazy about Nemail or Horde. Are there any squirrelmail users who would strongly recommend it? It sounds like it could be a real hassle to install, so I don't want to go to all the trouble for nothing. - Chad

Thanks for the informative posts. I'm relatively new to the web design world - especially the server side - so I'm always ready to learn something new. Please keep it coming. - Chad

I figured out what is happening, but I don't know how to fix it. I am using Frontpage 2002 to publish my web site, and every time I publish, Frontpage deletes my subdomain folder. I haven't yet found a setting in Frontpage to stop this. Any ideas? - Chad

I set up a subdomain yesterday, and it worked just fine. I set it up to redirect to my Horde webmail page. When I tried to redirect it again today, I get the following error message: Error: while opening /home/mysite/public_html/webmail/.htaccess Could I have set it up wrong? How can I make it work now? - Chad

I wrote a MS Access database, which is accessed by a handful of users over a LAN in a hospital environment. It works well, but I was wondering if there is any real advantage to making a similar web-based database? I want to experience more in web design, but I need to be able to justify it. It seems to me it would be more complicated, but that it would allow more flexibility. Security is not a major issure for my database. Any ideas? thanks, Chad

FSUChucky3, 1) By webmail script, do you mean horde or neomail? If so, I am primarily using horde, but in my original message you'll see that I am getting a different variation of the problem with each of them. 2) I have only a few users, and I have only had the account for about a week - so no, no other problems have been reported. 3) I will try emailing you directly. I noticed today that when I send email to my Lotus Notes email account at work, the email is addressed from either cpanel@server24.totalchoicehosting.com (using Horde) or my domain name@server24.totalchoicehosting.com (using neomail). All other email I receive at work appears to have the correct addresses. When I send email to my Yahoo! email account from webmail, Yahoo! shows the proper From: address (chad@my domain name.com). And when I send email from Outlook Express (using the same account) to my work it also has the correct From: address (chad@my domain name.com). So I'm only seeing the problem on email from webmail goint to my Lotus Notes email acct. If this problem happens to any emails that I send out to other people, they cannot reply to my emails. Has anyone seen this before? Chad
