  1. Thanks Dick. What kind of explanation can you give me for what is happening? Why would I be the ONLY person who sees this oddity on their website? I asked the woman on the phone if she had tried to access the forum from her home computer and if everything appeared normal on her screen. She said there was no problem. I don't understand what you have done to replicate this. I know it is going to be something really simple that I'm just not clicking the right key to "fix." Have you actually gone to the website? You know I will pick away at this until I solve it. I am retired. I have the time!
  2. Do you have any idea why the left column on this website appears like this on my computer screen? I have never had a website do this before. I have alerted the folks who set up the website (Weekend To End Breast Cancer) and they say I am the only person who is seeing the jumbled words on their webpages. My computer is set to the same ratio as the website. I have tried zooming in and out using CTRL and my mouse ... it does not correct the problem. Is there something obvious that we are missing? MM
  3. Thank you. Oops, I should have done a search on that SMF first. Never occurred to me. So, sounds like folks have lots of trouble with SPAM. Hmm. This forum I am considering will only be used by a very small group of people. "If" I decide to set it up everyone will have to use their real names to keep them honest, and there will be no public access. I am assuming here that it's possible for me to set it up this way. I just want a VERY basic forum set up. I looked up Invision and read their details. It is far more than I need.
  4. I shall see just how much interest in this forum idea grows and if there's lots, the money wouldn't likely be an issue.
  5. My husband and I live in a multi building new condo development. Folks are wanting a forum of some kind, beyond those awful strata meetings, where they can communicate with other owners. What are your thoughts on this? My concern is that it would soon turn into a venue for neighbours to start slagging each other about noise, or not cleaning up after their dogs ... or the discrepancies in their condo units that aren't being taken care of by the builder ... if you catch my drift? Obviously there would have to be controls on the forum. Just how simple/difficult is it to set up a forum, like TCH uses? I suppose the other option would be to set up an email address on gmail, something like that. People who want their email addresses visible could communicate that way. Anyhoo, I'd like to hear what y'all have to say about this. MM
  6. Hmmm? I LOVE to cook! You guys need me to send you some recipes!!! So, if you like chili ... meatless or otherwize ... let me know ... I've got two recipes that are fabulous! I made both recipes in the past two weeks and kudos from everyone. MM
  7. Thank you so much for your reply. Helpful as always. MM
  8. Should I download Silverlight? Why? Regards, MM
  9. Thank you so much. I have just printed out our address book and it looks very professional if I do say so myself. Followed your instructions re using Word to format. Why didn't I think of that???? Don't answer that. Anyhoo, you were a big help. Sometimes I just can't see the forest for the trees.
  10. I dumped ALL Adobe stuff off the computer when it was suggested to me that I download Foxit. I either get "download plug in" when I try to open a video ... or I get download Adobe Flash Player.
  11. Okay, now I'm totally frustrated! I can't open ANY videos in the news. I keep getting the pop ups that tell me I HAVE to download Adobe. What gives?
  12. Actually it does show up on his side as the default application. Fortunately he gets minimal .pdf files so he will just have to keep sending them over to my side and viewing them from there. Hate it when I can't figure something out.
  13. Can you tell me why Foxit will not open Reuters UK? It is demanding I install an Adobe Plug in.
  14. Is there someone "out there" who works efficiently with Excel? My experience with the program is very minimal. I have all of our addresses and telephone numbers on a spreadsheet. I am trying to print out a list. I'm doing it with Microsoft Word as a merged label mailing. When in Excel I have set up my labels to appear with a variety of fonts, bold and underlining. None of these things are appearing when I print out my labels. What do I need to do to force the merge to use the fonts etc., that I wish to appear on the label format?
  15. I have a little problem with Foxit. My husband got an email this morning with a pdf file attached. The icon in the attachment line was blank. No Foxit icon. He forwarded the email to my side of the computer. It arrived with the appropriate Foxit icon showing and I had no trouble opening the document. I tried sending it back to him. Same problem. I have changed his status on the computer to Administrator to see if that would make a difference. I have reduced the security levels on his Outlook Express program. I have looked in control panel to see what the defaults are and there is no mention of .pdf as a selection. He has the Foxit icon in his quick start. If I click on it it opens properly.
  16. Thank you Bruce - to the rescue as always. Actually I had Foxit Reader on my computer! I think I downloaded it at some point and never installed it. Probably when I got this new computer and was wading my way through Vista. So, I've cleaned all of Adobe off and all is well. Thank you again and all the best to you and yours in the coming year.
  17. I have just attempted to print out a PDF form. I got this screen ... Yellow triangle, Acrobat Plug In .... could not launch. I tried several different PDF files and got the same. I have the following files installed on my computer. Could you let me know if they are out of date and if I should delete them and install something else: Adobe Acrobat 5.0 Adobe Flash Player 10 Active X Adobe Flash Player 10 Plug in Adobe Reader
  18. So I guess that "desktop companion" prints out a decent sized list you can leave out for the family? Many years ago when Casio first came out with little 3 x 5" gizmos that had mini keyboards and screens ... I kept memos and address books, calendars ... it was just the neatest little thing. I could type a zillion miles a minute with my thumbs, take notes at meetings, back stuff up on my computer and print it out, you name it. Loved that thing. It finally died of old age. I've never made the switch to the world of the Blackberry and things of that ilk. I bought something like a Blackberry a few years ago and found it so much more convoluted than the ol' Casio that I took it back.
  19. Hmm, I'd rather not install that Beta program. I don't feel comfortable with them. I prefer that all the bugs have been worked out by the brilliant before I start trusting them. I have automatic updating. My machine is checked daily and all updates are downloaded then.
  20. My 9" x 7" looseleaf style address book is falling apart and has a million pencilled in changes in it. I don't have the program that it was originally made for me on. It's gotta go. I have most of the names and addresses up do date on XL and I still remember how to make changes to that spreadsheet. Unfortunately I haven't used XL for years and can't remember much about using the program efficiently to actually "do" things with it. I'm wondering how the rest of you have set up your household address books so that they are easy to keep up to date and print out into a small 9" x 7" binder.
  21. I had a feeling I might get an answer like that. I guess we will just have to be satisfied with a switch to Firefox, on both sides of the computer.
  22. I'm laughing! Yes, I've just suggested he not use IE anymore. As for the other suggestions re spyware etc., I'm way ahead of you on that ... I'm very thorough with my computer. No we don't have Yahoo toolbars installed. My question is still: What about un-installing IE and reinstalling it to see if perchance some portion of it has been damaged?
  23. Yes I've rebooted several times. Yes ... I use ccleaner. I have 221 GB of free space. I've logged myself off. I have the same problem with IE on my side of the computer. Can I delete and reinstall IE? DH says that this happened when Shaw messed up our account and we had to re-enter all of our email identities. Is that possible? Would there be a connection.
  24. I have since discovered that problem was most likely caused because ShawSecure was doing its full scan. It still happens once in a blue moon.
  25. Hi and Merry Christmas to you all! We have one computer. It's Vista. I use Mozilla Firefox on my side and my husband uses Internet Explorer 7 on his side. Suddenly it is taking FOREVER for the IE browser to open ... and to close for that matter. When he clicks on his favourites - nada. Just an empty drop down box. So I switched to my side and tried IE. Same thing. Firefox is humming along smoothly as always. I've tried to solve the problem on a microsoft help page and it gets so darn convoluted I gave up. We'd really appreciate your advice as to what to do.
