I created a directory called g2 and typed the path like you showed me but now I have an error that says this is a read only. Either I'm not understanding something or I'm doing something wrong. Sheryl

I've never been able to add a photo album to my site cause I never understood how to do it, but I've been following the detailed instructions for downloading Gallery and was doing quite well until I got to a page on the Configuration script that's looking for a path to store my photos. It says they recomend you store them in a directory that isn't accessible to the web. It showed a Directory path and since I didn't know what they were talking about, I figured I'd just use what was typed in but the next page gave me error messages saying the directory didn't exist. Now I need to figure out how to set up a directory to store my photos and I'm not sure if that was included in your directions. Everything on the error page sounds Greek to me. I hope it's ok to copy and paste what this storage page is telling me to do. If I shouldn't have copied it, I'm sorry and you can delete it. Gallery needs a directory to store your images. The directory we chose for you will work, but its location or current name does not provide maximum security. Either select a new directory outside of the document root directory or add a random string to the end of the directory name (e.g. g2data_fd74f557db). If someone could explain in simple form what I need to do, I'd really appreciate it. Thanks. Sheryl

Thanks for the help and suggestions. I'll open a ticket. I hope someone can figure out where the problem is coming from. When I by passed my router, I hooked my computer directly into my DSL modem and set up a new internet connection that went straight to my ISP so it does seem as if it has something to do with my ISP. I've had an account with TotalChoice for over a year now and this problem just started maybe a couple months ago. At first I thought there might be something wrong with my computer so I wiped the whole thing out, reformatted it and reloaded everything but that didn't help. I also thought it might have something to do with the new AV program I bought, Windows Live One but I don't have that on this second computer I used that was also having problems. I'm not sure if that AV program works to protect other computers on the network even if the program isn't installed on them and maybe that was causing the problem. In any event, I'll write a ticket and hope someone can help me out. Sheryl

I am getting so frustrated. I tried your suggestion and I'm not really sure it helped. It seems to be a hit or miss as to whether or not I can log into cpanel and then work on my site. I tried using another computer on my home network and couldn't get the sign in screen to show up after trying to go to cpanel. In fact, the computer froze up. I'll type my web address and/cpanel and if I'm lucky, the username and password box with show up but most times it looks as if the screen is going to change to the sign in screen but instead nothing happens. My web address remains in the web address line of my browser but the page never does anything. I noticed if I keep hitting enter, occassionally the sign in screen will finally show up. Then if I'm lucky to get into cpanel, it takes for ever for the pages to show up or change from one page to another. And by forever, I mean at least 5 minutes. I feel like I'm on dial up. I tried by passing my router to see if it would be any better and it wasn't. I have been able to access your forums faster so that's a plus. Oh, and the computer that froze and wouldn't let me get to the sign in screen, doesn't time out when I run that tracer. Go figure, lol. Something is really screwy and I don't know what's causing this problem so I'm not sure who I should be looking to for help. As far as I know, I don't have any problems accessing any other web sites so it seems for some reason, my computers don't like Total Choice. Sheryl

By "cache" do you mean temp files and cookies? I'm using Winxp. Sheryl

So this is my ISP's fault? Do you know what I'd have to do to get it fixed? I don't have any problems going to other internet sites but for some reason, any site pertaining to totalchoice just doesn't want to work quickly or work at all. I have several computers in my house all networked together and as I said, I tried one of those computers and was able to log on with no problem. Of course, that could have been that one time out of 10 when it actually works so maybe I should try logging on a few more times using different computers. Sheryl

I'm wondering if I have a similiar problem. I've been having the hardest time trying to work on my site because it either takes for ever for a page to come up or it just won't come up. 9 times out of 10 when I try to go to cpanel, nothing happens. On that 10th time, when I can get into cpanel, it takes several minutes for anything to open. I tried getting to my cpanel from another computer in my house and didn't have any problems. I'm also finding that just coming to these forums takes for ever. I thought I'd try doing that tracert and all I get is timed outs. I noticed that this closes too without me telling it to close so I'll copy as many lines I can before I lose it again. Tracing route to sherylspage.com [72.18.130.5] over a maximum of 30 hops: 1 * * * Request timed out. 2 * * * Request timed out. 3 * * * Request timed out. 4 * * * Request timed out. 5 * * * Request timed out. 6 * * * Request timed out. 7 * * * Request timed out. 8 * * * Request timed out. 9 * * * Request timed out. 10 * Are all these timed outs the reason I'm having problems and if so, can you do something to fix it or do I have to do something to fix it? It seems to be working and now I'm wondering if it was ever not working. I don't remember seeing that message in the past about my uploading being restricted but it was still there yet I was able to upload files. Is that just a warning message in case I'm getting low on space? Earlier today, I created a new folder where I wanted these files and after uploading them, I realized I used a capital letter to name the folder and wanted to use all lower case letters. I couldn't figure out how to change the folder name so I created a new folder and then tried to move my files. After that, I kept getting error messages saying I couldn't move a file and nothing seemed to be working right, or so I thought. I did finally figure out how to change the name of a folder, which was so easy if you click the right thing but still couldn't get my files in it so I thought I'd start all over again. That's when I noticed the message about uploads being restricted and figured I'd made a mess of things. Maybe I didn't and just never noticed that message before. In any event, it seems ok so thanks for the help. Sheryl

ok thanks. Sheryl

It says I have 896.55 MBs left and the file was no where's near as big as that, lol. Sheryl

I was trying to upload a file on my site this morning and don't know what I did but I must have done something I shouldn't have done because I'm now getting an error message saying my uploading has been restricted because I exceeded the file system quota. I don't understand what this means or what I did. First of all, I'm sorry for doing something I shouldn't have done and second, could someone explain what I must have done so I don't do it again? Thanks Sheryl

I'm feeling a little more encouraged tonight. I've been reading my books and experimenting practically all day today and I think I'm starting to get the hang of it. Well a little anyways. I decided I needed to start off simple. For a beginner, I think I was trying to get too fancy. I love making background tiles with my psp program and couldn't wait to use them on my new site. I figured out how to make a a double layer background using tables and then I tried to add a third table along the top of my inner background with links to other pages I wanted to create but I couldn't seem to make anything in the body of my page look centered after doing this so I got rid of all my tables and just went with a single image background for the time being. I managed to make my CSS style sheet but I'm having a little trouble trying to get my font size figured out. I think my brain has had it for today. Thanks for all the help and suggestions. Sheryl

LOL. You can breathe easy cause I won't be using MS Publisher. I couldn't figure out how to use it. And I must be hopeless, I couldn't figure out how to use note tab either. I'm one of these people who needs a step by step instruction book in front of me. Maybe I'll have to stick with using notepad and using my HTML, XHTML, and CSS books. If I don't use note tab, can I still use the DOCTYPE code you included Don at the beginning of my html document? And do you know anything about 1st Page 2000? I think I may have used that program at one time when I was first trying to learn how to create a web page. This is going back about 3 years now so I don't really remember much about it, but if this was the program I used, I believe I figured out how to use it. Sheryl
-
Thanks Lisa, I figured it must have been part of that doctype information. I had a short work morning so now I can play around some more. BTW, I have Microsoft Publisher, which I've never used, but I noticed the box says it has a web site wizard. Do you know if this is something I can use to create my web site and would it be easier then using note tab? Maybe I better open up this program and see how it works. Sheryl
-
Thanks for that template Don and thanks for the suggestion about using Note tab. I've heard people speak of it and silly me thought everyone was talking about notepad. I've downloaded the free version so I'll try working with it. I wish I didn't have to run off to work this morning since I'm anxious to play around with this. One question though. In my HTML studies, I read that each page has to start with <html> although I don't see that at the beginning of your template. Is that because it says it in the Doctype? Sheryl

Thanks for the help. Is Front Page an HTML Editor because I own that program but have never used it or know how to use it. I've been using notepad to type out the HTML codes. I went to that schools site and learn a little more about all this. I've been working with my CSS book all evening and think I'm understanding things a little better. I've been trying to practice writing CSS by following the examples in my book but for some reason, when I try and apply what I've learned to my own web page, it doesn't seem to work. I'm having the hardest time trying to set a color for my links. Now as to that Doctype, can I just copy one from my book or a website? This isn't something that has to be assigned to me is it? If I'm using both xHTML and Css, do I need a document that says both? I noticed at that Schools site a document description for strict xHTML. !DOCTYPE html PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD XHTML 1.0 Strict//EN" "http://www.w3.org/TR/xhtml1/DTD/xhtml1-strict.dtd" Can I just put this at the top of my xHTML file? Sheryl

I thought I was making some progress in figuring out how to use HTML to create a web site, but after reading this thread I'm pretty confused. So what you're saying, HTML uses different codes then xHTML? If I use the wrong code and don't have a program that tells me I'm using the wrong code, what happens? Something I was following showed a line break as <br /> so this is what I was using when I wanted my sentence to drop down a line but I spent all evening last night, practicing HTML by following some instructions on the web and I noticed they used <br> for dropping down a line. I had been using <br /> and had no problems with my sentence dropping down a line but when I saw this other tag, I switched and everything still looked the same when I opened the html web page. Can you use both HTML and xHTML on the same page? And during my HTML practice last night, it was suggested I use CSS to tell the page what color I wanted my fonts. I've never worked with CSS so I bought another book today called Sams Teach Yourself CSS in 24 hours. I'm still on hour 1 which basically explains what CSS is and it sounds as though this can be used with HTML and xHTML or is it HTML and "or" xHTML? I haven't done much with my website since I'm still pretty ignorant when it comes to using HTML. I thought about trying to figure out Frontpage but in doing a search for more information about Frontpage, it sounds as though many people don't care for this program. I know my son who's pretty good with HTML doesn't like it. Sheryl

Hi Tom, I thought I had everything typed out correctly but I redid it and it suddenly dawned on me that I forgot about upper and lower case letters again. I put my videos in a a separate folder called Videos but used videos for the path. I changed my video folder to a lower case v and it worked. I need to remember to quit using capital letters, lol. Yes, I realize I could be using up a lot of bandwidth so I'll have to watch out for that. If I keep my videos in zip form instead, I shouldn't use up as much bandwidth. Is that correct? Sheryl
-
I'm trying to upload some video files but can't seem to get the files to work, once I upload them. I'm assuming I can't create these files and upload them the same way I did at my free web site. This is what I tried to do: Create the file for example, http://domainname.com/video.wmv then save it on notepad. Create a second file changing the file name to video1.wvx and saved that using notepad. I then uploaded my video and the wvx file to my site but it won't play or open. Are there any instructions on what I need to do? Sheryl

Thanks Jim. I guess you were helping me out while I was figuring this out for myself. Sheryl

Oops, I think I figured it out. I decided to try making my second page a link from my first page without using index as part of the address and it worked so I guess that means I didn't need index in the address bar. Sheryl
-
Now that I've set up my main page, that being domain name.com/index.html, I'd like to set up a second page but I'm not sure how I go about doing this. Do I first create my page like I did for my index page then upload it to the public html folder? Or do I have to create this page first under the public_html folder then upload my file to it? Or neither? I tried my first suggestion and I think it uploaded alright, but then I wasn't sure how to see it. If that first suggestion was right, can I get to this page without going to my index page first? And if so, what address would I use? For instance, if my second page was called second page, would the address go something like..... domainname.com/index/secondpage.html? Sheryl

Thanks for letting me check out your album. I'm going to try and work on this over the weekend or once I get through Thanksgiving, lol. Sheryl
-
Thanks for the link. I thought I saved it when I found it the first time but I guess not. This time I made sure to save it. I just have to figure out what program to use and of course how to use it. I'm a little afraid to try that Coppermine because their tutorial showed aboutblank as a web page and I believe aboutblank is a trojan. Sheryl

I would like to be able to upload several jpegs of mine for people to see and put them in a photo album. I'm pretty sure I found a thread that listed different programs that allowed you to do this but now that I'm ready to try doing this, I can't remember where I saw that thread. I've looked all over and I just can't seem to remember where I saw it. I hope someone can point me in the right direction. Thanks. Sheryl
