I got 19, but only because I was a lucky guesser (on some). I know nothing about golf! (Well, I guess, now I know a little bit more.)

This topic got moved while I was replying.... Hi jrg70, welcome to the forums. To do what you describe, you would just create a forwarder in cPanel, NOT an e-mail or webmail account. If all you create is the forwarder alias@****** to point to you@gmail.com, then mail will just get passed along. If you create the forwarder alias@****** AND you create a webmail account for the same alias name, then you will get both. It sounds like all you need to do is delete the webmail account and your forwarding will continue to work as you desire. Again, welcome to the forums. Don't be a stranger!!

Or, if you need them at some future point, and can't find the signup e-mail, you can always open a help-desk ticket (link at top of page). They can tell you what the nameservers are for your specific server. If you are trying to register a domain on another site, but haven't yet signed up for hosting, then you will probably want to park the domain at the registrar's site, and then sign up for hosting here. When you get your welcome e-mail, you can go back and "un-park" your domain by entering TCH's nameservers into the correct location in the control panel of your registrar.

McCrockett, In case you weren't clear, IMHO isn't an FTP program; it is short for "in my humble opinion." Steve wasn't recommending a specific program. Rather, he was just prefacing his remarks by stating that he was about to share his own opinion. YMMV (Your mileage may vary). If you are looking for a specific FTP program, I'd suggest you look at this thread: http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/i...ic=25066&hl=FTP

Ok. Can I just say that I LOVE that your banner image is so wide that it doesn't repeat even at 1600x1200 resolution? I mean, man! That picture just keeps going! Very cool. Love the picture. I know this isn't the reviews forum, but I just had to say something! Yay for a great banner picture!!!

I think you have to consider your audience as you make this decision, and decide how important your informaiton it. If you were designing a site for the IRS, then your audience is pretty much every citizen of the United States, including tech-savvy and very un-tech-savvy folks. It is important that all of them be able to read information on the site so for them, you'd want to design a site that looked good at 800x600 resolution. If you were designing a site for computer programmers, then you can guess that many in your audience have their monitors set to a large resolution (and maybe have double screens). Since most people in this audience would (a) have a higher resolution already, or ( be able to change their resolution, or © could skip the information on your site if they didn't want to adjust their resolution, then I think it is okay to go with whatever resolution you wish. So I'd suggest that you analyze your audience and decide who is using YOUR site, and then decide if you are okay losing those whose resolution isn't up to par. If you are, go with your 1024x768. If not, reconsider the 800x600. My guess, is that you'll probably find that 1024x768 is going to be okay. (Unless you want my mom to visit your page, and then you'll have to go to 600x420. She likes those icons REALLY big). Good luck.

I also love the Winter Olympics. Being from Salt Lake, we had a wonderful time with the last ones. We got tickets to some of the events, including free tickets to a BNL concert at the medals plaza. Those were good times! So this year we'll be watching them on TV. My wife and I are particularly looking forward to the short track events, the skeleton events, and the figure skating events. We're considering volunteering at the 2010 games in Vancouver B.C. That would be a riot, wouldn't it! Yay for a great international sporting competition like the Olympics!!

I am not sure exactly what you are asking for; however have you tried saving the Excel file for the web using pivot tables? That has some pretty cool enchanced functionality that you can use on a website. However, I do not think that it allows you to modify or change the information. Just sort and stuff like you can do in Excel. There are some cool grouping options as well. Again, I am not sure if it is what you want, but if you have not tried it already, it is worth a look.

In answer to another of your questions, Robmonster, you should note that Private Registration (WhoIs hiding) just hides your information from outside users. If you use TCH as your registrar, TCH will still know where you are, and can still contact you when your domain requires renewal. You will still be required to provide valid identifying information (name, address, e-mail), but WhoIs hiding just keeps that information from becoming publicly accessible.

What you have to remember here is that you are on a SHARED server. The decisions that TCH makes are for the good of everybody. If every single person who hosts with TCH demanded specific server setups or specific components be installed, overall productivity of ALL sites would diminish There are limitations on what you can do on a shared server. That is simply a fact of shared hosting life. In that sense, you get what you pay for. (Actually, at TCH you are getting much more than what you pay for, but that is beside the point.) If you want to compete with the "big dogs" in your target segment, then you may eventually have to consider a solution like a semi-dedicated server or a dedicated server. Yeah, they don't come at four bucks a month. But for four bucks a month, you're already getting a great bang. If you have specific requirements for your hosting so that you can "run a top notch site", and if those requirements can't be met on a shared server, then you need to look at options that let you upgrade to a server, where if you choose to have software that lowers your overall site performance, it won't affect the other users on the server. I, for one, am glad that TCH watches out for EVERYBODY on the shared server. Many additional software packages that have been proposed by TCH customers are simply so resource intensive, that everybody's site suffers. Thank you Head Guru Bill and the TCH staff who work so hard to keep my site productive and working well.

Sherie, I wouldn't anticipate any problems. I was able to complete the database backup (from cPanel), download the install from WordPress.org, upload the install to my hosting account, unzip the file on the server, and install it --- all in less than 5 minutes. It really is an easy process!!

/clears throat Um, sorry about the grammar trouble there folks. You'd never be able to tell I graduated with a degree in English! Corrected that would be: /hopes his own kids (and his college English professors) never read this thread...

Done. I backed up my database, and then uploaded the zip file. Then I unzipped it using File Manager. Wento the upgrade.php page, and I'm done. Man I love WordPress.

Contacted Regarding Domain Registration
abinidi replied to kellybellydotnet's topic in Open Discussion
I see that you are in the US (Chicago-ish <grin>), so is your phone number on the national Do Not Call registry? If so, this guy is calling you in violation of federal law. When I get calls like this, I ask them their name, their agent number, and the company they represent. Then I inform them that they are in violation of federal law and I'll be reporting the call to the proper authorities. If they won't give me basic information about their name/company name, I tell them that they are violating federal law, and ask to be taken off their calling list immediately, or I'll contact the police. It is really fruterating to get these kinds of calls. If you believe that the mail you receive regarding renewing your domain is decepting, you can always contact your state attorney general's office. Send them a copy of the letter with your specific complaints. It is illegal for companies to try to trick you into renewing your domain with them by trying to send you a pseudo-invoice. While you can't do much about it as one person, your state attorney general can, and if they get enough complaints, they have more incentive to do somethig. But if we all just ignore them and never complain, these sharks will keep preying on those who aren't informed enough to know that what is happing isn't right. I dunno. Just my thoguhts. -
Microsoft Outlook Email Client
abinidi replied to queenpictoria's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
Don't forget that your username is a combination of your email box name, the + sign, and the domain name. So if your email address is me@example.com, your username is me+example.com. Hope that helps. -
Another Reason To Upgrade To Thunderbird 1.5
abinidi replied to TCH-Rob's topic in Software/Scripts/Other Alerts
I have it installed, but mostly I've just been using Gmail. For whatever reason I can't connect to Gmail from work. (My other SMTP connections work fine. Just Gmail's seems to be blocked.) So I've WANTED to switch to Thunderbird, but don't because since I can't get my Gmail to work, I've just been using Gmail as my only client. But then again, now I have high-speed at home (just upgraded to DSL a couple of weeks ago). Maybe its time to start getting emails at home through Thunderbird. (Or The Bat!)... -
My experience with this has been "no". I think that cPanel doesn't go out and actually check the version of phpBB that you have installed. It just knows what version(s) it installed (and upgraged) for you. I can't say this is true for certain, but I think about a year ago I installed phpBB, and upgraded manually and the upgrade was not reflected in the cPanel phpBB upgrade version. To be honest, though, the phpBB upgrade only takes me about 10 minutes from start to finish. A WordPress upgrade only takes me about 5 minutes from start to finish. The developers of these software packages have tried hard to make this process as painless as possible. For the most part, I think they're pretty successful. (However, nothing I've seen is quite like Simple Machines' upgrade by clicking on an upgrade button in the admin interface. That is admittedly pretty slick. And I'm not an SMF user.)

Has Cute Messed Up My Connection ?
abinidi replied to Footybits's topic in Cute Site Builder & Cute FTP
Welcome to the forums, Mick. We love to help, so don't hesitate to come back!! -
For what its worth, I just checked the cPanel implementations on my various servers. Only one of the four has phpBB 2.0.19 as an upgrade option. The other three don't. And I'm pretty sure that the one that has 2.0.19 is a server that was recently converted to a RAID configuration. That supports my idea that the newest builds from cPanel are installed on servers as needed. Anyway, good luck. Best wishes.

Hi Playarta, As you can see from message two in this thread (scroll up to the top...) the version of phpBB that is available in cPanel for upgrade is dependant on cPanel. As I understand it, cPanel releases updated versions on a regular basis. When they release their latest version, they include the lastest versions of the software, like phpBB. TCH gets newest installations of cPanel and installs them on the servers as needed. That means you could have slightly different releases of cPanel for domains hosted on different servers. (I have accounts on servers 49, 36, 35, and 76, for example.) I'm guessing that these increment cPanel builds aren't being rolled out to all servers unless it fixes a security hole or something. Or maybe it just takes time to get all of the servers updated. I'm not sure what TCH's policy is there. I suppose you could try submitting a help desk ticket and asking them to install the latest version of cPanel. I'm not sure how they will respond. However, TCH's policy (for as long as I've been a customer here... I think its more than 3 years now) has always required that customers (us) keep our software up-to-date. That is our own responsibility. cPanel provides some software, but there is no guarantee that it is up-to-date or free from secuirty flaws. As a responsible web user, it is my job to keep the sites I maintain up to date with their software releases--regardless of how I installed it (cPanel or manual). If you want forums that are easy to upgrade, I'd suggest you consider Simple Machines Forums. I'm not a SMF user myself, but I know a lot of people here at TCH are happy with them. And they have an option in the SMF admin area that allows you to upgrade your installation to the latest version. SMF also has a phpBB importer, so you don't have to worry about losing any of your current content. SMF is an option you should consider if you are serious about wanting a forum that is easy to upgrade. Yes, you have to install SMF manually, but it is one of the easier installs out there. You don't have to modify any code in any of the files. You can just upload the .zip file to your server, unzip it in the folder you want to use, create the database in cPanel, and go to the installer page. You fill out a couple of fields, and that's it. I know this isn't the answer you wanted. Sorry about that. In any case, welcome to the TCH forums. Don't be a stranger! (This was my 700th post in the Family Forums!! Yay!!)

Ok. I'm probably about to get in over my head, and I probably won't be able to answer your question. But hey, I'll share the little tidbit of information I know that seems to be remotley related. So what I'm hearing you say is that you want to mouse over a flash image. When you mouse over, you want to trigger an event in an unrelated Flash file? Is that correct? Because if that is what you are trying to do, I can't help. I do know how to make Dreamweaver use JavaScript to accomplish something similar with .jpg or .gif images. Basically what you do is you click on the object that will be the mouse-over image. In the properties bar (I'm not sure what the bar is called, really. It is where you type a URL if you are making the highlighted object a link.) put a # sign in the Address/link field. Now with that item still selected, you want to go to the Behaviors tab/bar/window/whatever it is in version 8. You want to add a new swap-image behavior. Dreamweaver should give you a dialog box that allows you to say which images on the page you want to swap out during the event. So basically you set it up so that when you mouse over image1, image 1 changes to its roll-over state, and image2 changes to its roll-over state, and image999 changes to its roll-over state. Then you have to make sure that Dreamweaver puts in a swap-image-restore behavior. The trouble with this is if you are trying to execute a Flash action in a second file when you mouse over a first flash image, I'm not sure how to do that. I'm not sure how Flash will know to execute an action in a separate Flash file. So this idea above will work with standard images, but I'm not sure what you will have to do to make it work if you are using Flash images that reuire a special action to be executed. Turns out I don't think I was very helpful. But I'm going to post this anyway in case it helps somebody else down the line. Seems like too much text to just delete Best wishes. Have you tried a Dreamweaver forum? or a Flash forum?

Microsoft Outlook Email Client
abinidi replied to queenpictoria's topic in CPanel and Site Maintenance
I'll also throw my hat into this one and support Thunderbird. It is Outlook-ish in its user interface, so if you are comfortable with Outlook, you should find Thunderbird very easy to use. And it's free. I love open source software. Head Guru---I'm going to have to check on The Bat! You've got my interete piqued. -
You could also open a help desk ticket to Sales or Billing and they can check to see what the status is. Since you don't have a user name or password yet, you can just type "none" into the username and password fields at the bottom of the ticket. There is a link to the help desk at the top of this forum page. Welcome to the family!
