If you aren't using them, yes you can delete them.

There is a "cgi-bin" folder in the public_html folder on all domains. This is normally where scripts (like counters, webforms, etc) are stored that run on a website. Fantastico will also install scripts into this folder if you choose to install them. "entropybanner" and "randhtml" are two that come to mind. Also, counter scripts are/can be stored in this folder. If you have not installed any additional scripts with SMF I would think this folder would probably be empty. An "sgi-bin" folder is the same as the "cgi-bin" folder but scripts in it run in secure mode.

I used the automatic upgrade for this last update and found it incredibly slow. I manage 6 WordPress blogs and can update them all manually in the time it took to upgrade one automatically. So I don't think I will be going that route again since it's so simple to do the manual updating. One thing I did do was set up a special FTP user for upgrade purposes and did not use my cPanel credentials to do the upgrade.

As far as I know WordPress has never had a backup function without the aid of a plugin. Since you have been deleting things did you happen to delete the plugin? Personally I use dbsender to do the job.

Welcome to the forums dsb Sorry to hear you don't like the new dashboard in the latest version of WP. I too didn't like it once they released it but I've learned to like it since. I still think it's slower than previous versions but that's another story. I do not know if you can migrate your posts back to blogger or not. I started with Blogger and migrated the other way. But I do remember I didn't have to mess with the CNAME record to publish my content in my own domain space hosted here. They have (had) the capability of publishing my content to my domain hosted here instead of their servers. Have you checked for any dashboard plugins that would give you what you are wanting? I remember there were some plugins for previous versions but I haven't looked for the latest version. The help desk will be able to wipe your hosting space clean so you can install another copy of Wordpress. Here are some other suggestions that may make your WP experience a little more pleasant. I don't care for the editor in WP either. I have been using two other options to compose my posts. One is Blogdesk and the other is a Firefox extension called ScribeFire. Maybe something like that would ease your frustrations.

I do not believe so because it is in shared space. You may be able to edit templates with PHPList though.

Well, I was talking about using phpAdmin to make the change but adding a new user with a new password and deleting the old user would also work. Still, make sure you have good backups before making any changes.

You need to find the table the password is stored in. Select the password field and edit it to change it. Please, please, please make a backup before changing anything.
