kajoiner Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 (edited) My wife is having an unusual problem in that she is getting her web site linked to some websites where we do not want the link posted. She hosts a website for some dolls that she makes and the name she has given her dolls are "Prissy May Dolls". In looking at the awstats, it appears that there are several I AM A SPAMMER sites that have added her site to there links page. There are several (about 50) click throughs from websites like x******* and n*******. Does it hurt her standing with search engines when she is listed on sites like these? Is there any way to prevent them from linking to her site? I don't think we want the link listed there regardless! I thankfully don't have this problem hosting a Boy Scout site, and this is the first month that I have noticed her having this problem. Note: Edited out site names. TCH-Rob Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 No, you can not prevent a link. The good news is that it will not hurt you either. If it did, think of the damage you could do to competing sites by having bad links to their site. From Google; There is almost nothing a competitor can do to harm your ranking or have your site removed from our index. Your rank and your inclusion are dependent on factors under your control as a webmaster, including content choices and site design. Quote
Virtual Imager Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 (edited) We had this discussion several weeks ago: "I AM A SPAMMER Sites Hiding Behind Blogs" http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/forums/i...?showtopic=5687 There are some good links given in that discussion to other boards and sites that also deal with the problem. I probably had a dozen I AM A SPAMMER referrers in my stats at that time. The next month (December) I had none. I thought TCH did something to block them, but apparently not... I guess I'm just lucky that they disappeared on their own. TCH-Bruce - corrected link Edited April 28, 2004 by TCH-Bruce Quote
Deverill Posted April 28, 2004 Posted April 28, 2004 You could try asking them to remove it but they probably won't. As Rob said, they can't hurt you in the Search Engines and, as a matter of fact, may inadvertently help you slightly. Google uses page rank. If the page the link is on has a high page rank it will transfer, in part, to your site because of the "vote of confidence." Since the sites are so different it may not be a huge bump but it may be a slight one. I understand how you would want them to stop but there really is no way to do it other than if they agree to a request from you to remove it unless you want to go into the realm of high priced lawyers and defamation of character stuff. kajoiner Posted April 28, 2004 Author Posted April 28, 2004 unless you want to go into the realm of high priced lawyers and defamation of character stuff Not even that would work because % of visits that are coming from there are very low. It is not that big of a deal, I just have some trouble with a baby doll website being linked from a I AM A SPAMMER site. I guess it is just those morals kicking in. I will put them back in the box and not worry about it going forward. Thanks for the info. Quote
