I participate in various fundraising (mostly for AIDS/HIV care) bicycle rides every year and since the demise of the company that ran the big ones, I've been involved with smaller events that sprung up from the aftermath. The one I work closest with is all volunteer run to maximise the amount of the donation that goes to the beneficiaries.

I would like to set them up with the ability to accept donations online (currently all donations have to be postal mailed to them). Most likely I'll end up using paypal, but I'm interested to know if anyone else has worked with handling online donations for a charity and if there's any better solutions. Anything that can beat 2.9% fees for starters would be something of interest.

The target audience of this is primarily for various riders to create fundraising sites that they can have people donate online with, maybe creating a little bit of additional fundraising from people who would otherwise probably not take the time to print off a form and mail in a check.

I know it is more complicated, but I know of several people that have two paypal accounts, one that will accept credit cards and one that will not. The account that does not accept credit cards does not get charged the 2.9%. Some of the people I know have two links set up that will take them to different pages depending on how they plan to pay.

Are they a registered 501©3 charity? If so, you can always go with Network For Good:

Did you ever decide on a company? I am curious...........

We're kicking off a long-term, ongoing fundraiser out here for an auditorium restoration and we're considering online donations.

Not yet. I opted out of being on the event committee this year due to lack of spare time (just sticking with rider support and riding this year) so I don't get immediate feedback from the committee, and I also want to try to get something in place that will be a good multiyear decision, so I'm taking my time to research the options.

I'll let you know what does pan out. All the options mentioned above have some merit to them.

A shame you are unable to continue but it certainly happens. I shall continue to "look".

I do wonder though (and this may no longer be in the appropriate category) if I can just have the card numbers (securely) passed through the site. There is a real person already processing cards for us - all I would need is the number submitted.

Not sure how to do that either......... :)

Thanks

I didn't say I'm not continuing, just that I don't meet with the committee on a biweekly basis like I did last year. :)

I'm still looking at getting something in place for online donations, and I'm still quite involved.

You can take CC numbers through your site securely, but that will required SSL certificate, as well as a secure database (basically make sure the information is not retrievable). You also take additional risk, however, if you store credit card numbers.

If you use a payment processor, it's typically better to pass the credit card number straight to the payment processor (without storing the number on your server at all), get an authorization code from the payment processor, and only storing that.

Ahh........... I misunderstood. Good on you!

Seems a bit much to set up for what would probably be a negligable amount . The arts commission site is more of a local thing anyway and the site itself only gets about 500 hits a month. soooooooooooo .....

......but I sure would hate to miss just one big donation..............
