Dakota Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 I just received an email from support@secureserver.net asking me to autorenew my domain name through them. It's getting close to my renewal date 'Tax Day'. I am always leary of anyone asking me to 'click here and give my credit card#'. Is this the proper way to renew?? Roy fixyourowntv.com Quote
Boojum Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 Dakota: One thing you haven't specified is with whom you registered the domain name. If it is, in fact, secureserver.net, then the e-mail is probably legitimate. Probably. As a general rule, though, it is safest, when in doubt, to enter the address for the service in question (this applies to all sites that take credit card numbers and other financial data, Paypal or otherwise) in your browser address bar and then double-check that you are taken to a secure (https://...) server. This avoids being led to fake sites, which can sometimes look virtually identical to the sites they are designed to simulate. If you did not get the domain name through secureserver.net, I would advise you to proceed warily. Quote
Dakota Posted January 15, 2004 Author Posted January 15, 2004 I don't remember the exact company. But it was through TCH. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 I read this in LockerGnome this week and it's for detecting if the site you get taken to is the site you expected to go to. Type the following in to your browser's address bar while on the site in question and it will report the actual URL for that site. java script:alert("The real URL of this site is: " + location.protocol + "//" + location.hostname + "/"); I've created a link in my favorites and it works great. natimage Posted January 15, 2004 Posted January 15, 2004 Neat little trick, PDABruce! Dakota, I got an email such as you are describing a while back, and it was legitimate! It should make you sign into your secureserver.net account when you go to the link. Quote
