I've gone through the forums and different threads on this bulletin board before I came to the conclusion that I would need some help.

I am ready to switch from GeoCities to TotalHosting but I really want to make sure I don't mess anything up. There are a couple of questions that I would feel really good about having answered for me.

1. Will my site still remain functional even if I am having trouble getting switched over? My domain is not up for renewal until April.

2. What is the quickest and easiest way to transfer my files from GeoCities to TotalHosting? For instance...is there a way I can transfer all directly from GeoCities to TotalHosting? If not, would I be able to save all files to one specific folder on my computer and then FTP that folder to TotalHosting? If so, am I able to name it Decorativeartsbyjep.com, or Decorativeartsbyjep? Will I, then, have to move contents of this folder into another folder even if I don't have subdomains at this point? In other words..will this folder be able to be used as is, with all the gifs and jpgs and html pages?

3. Is there some type of tutorial area where I can go to and find information of "how to" do things on the control panel?

I know this may take a lot of space for answering, and I am wondering if I should contact someone else to find out this information. I can imagine the number of questions which are repeated over and over and I dont want to be one of those if I can find the info out some other way.

Thanks to anyone and everyone who can help me in these issues.

I've gone through the process of transferring a site twice in the last few weeks. It went pretty smoothly for me. I switched to one host and then found this one so I switched again. I am real happy with TotalChoice so I don't plan to switch again for a long time.

1.  Will my site still remain functional even if I am having trouble getting switched over?  My domain is not up for renewal until April.
After you sign up here you will get a detailed email with directions for what you should do. Basically you will need to contact whoever you have registered your domain with and get the DNS info changed to point to the servers here. It will take 24 to 48 hours in general for the new address to propagate throughout all the internet so the old site will still work until that happens.

2.  What is the quickest and easiest way to transfer my files from GeoCities to TotalHosting?

I used an FTP program to copy my site from the old server to my computer and then transferred that site from my computer to the servers here using FTP. It was pretty quick and painless.

3.  Is there some type of tutorial area where I can go to and find information of "how to" do things on the control panel?

I have found the Control Panel to be pretty easy to use. There is a link on it to go to the documentation. Good luck with the switch. If you run into any snags I'm sure you can get help here or at the Help Desk. I've really enjoyed playing with the new features available here.

Whatever you name the folder on your pc is of no consequence. When you upload, you can upload the entire contents (not the folder) into public_html directory on the server and you're golden. As is, with all the gifs and jpgs and html pages.

What FTP app do you plan to use? What app did you use to create your site?

Hi again...

Thanks Rick, and Lianna...for your quick responses. Although one might see messages of kudos, sometimes it sinks in more when you actually see the responses and times yourself.

I was just afraid of overlooking something which might jeopardize my site because of my ignorence in this process. Thanks again!

By the way, I was using the default FTP which came with GeoCities. Does the control panel come with it's own FTP programs? I read through the forums and saw where some are using different programs. Am I going to be opening up a floodgate if I ask which one technical suuport feels would work the best with this control panel? Any suggestionss? Although I like bells and whistles, right now I think I would be much better off finding the simplest one for the job.

Again...thanks Rick...and Lianna, for your timely response!

God Bless you,

Terry

Terry,

Oh, yeah. I'm sure that everyone here has their own favs.

cPanel does have a built in File Manager. Drawback: one file upload at a time.

So, the reco from me is to use a pc based FTP application. From there, it depends on what you're looking for, as you say bells-n-whistles, or price.

FREE:

WS_FTP LE

SmartFTP

Not Free:

CuteFTP

CuteFTP Pro (Secure)

CoffeeCup Direct FTP

BTW, if you use a Mac, Fetch is popular I hear.

I use CuteFTP XP. I love it. I really don't see a lot of utility difference between it and SmartFTP though. Try out SmartFTP, it's free, you don't lose anything for trying it. It is basically just drag-n-drop from your pc window pane to the remote server pane.

Hi, again, Lianna...

Thanks...I would go CRAZY trying to transfer one file at a time!! So...If CuteFTP has a trial period where I can try it out, I will do so.

If it doesn't, I will try the SmartFTP.

I love the idea of drag and drop!

Thanks again,

Yes, you can download a fully functional 30 day trial. If you decide to buy it ($39.95 w/o maintenance support agreement), then they will just send you a Registration (serial)number to enter into the version that you already have installed. That will unlock it for unlimited use.

SmartFTP seems to work much the same way as CuteFTP. I just haven't had time to download and give it the workout. Other folks here swear by it.

If you need any help using either to get setup, just yell.

I've used CuteFTP and SmartFTP as well. Right now I mainly use Filezilla (http://sourceforge.net/projects/filezilla) and love it. It's also free. It is much easier to use one of the dedicated FTP programs rather than the one in the CPanel. For that matter, just using the ftp in Internet Explorer would work. One thing I found was that my ISP is very slow at updating their DNS servers so everyone else was seeing my site before I could. I ended up adding an entry to my Wondows HOSTS file to get into my site using my domain name.

The hardest part for me was being patient waiting for the welcome email from TotalChoice after I signed up.

Thanks to everyone...for all the help. And... Lianna, don't you ever sleep?

I am trying cuteFTP and after a whole lot of scratching my head, I am almost finished with uploading my files to my new server! BOY AM I HAPPY ABOUT THAT!!!

Best to all of you...hope I won't have too much trouble getting everything set up the way I want it!

Have a great weekend!
