dreamcloudwolf Posted October 16, 2003 Posted October 16, 2003 I’ve been trying to set up it up so that I can use Netscape 7.1 to check my emails on Horde. Already have three users set up for emails in Horde – the Main account, spam account, and Jane account. Problem: - Receive emails from Horde, but I cannot send emails from Netscape. - Whenever I connect, it says things like: ----- Unable to verify the identity of server34.totalchoicehosting as trusted site. ----- Your browser does not recognize Certified authority ----- You’re connected to a site pretending to be a server What I did in setting it up: In Account Settings, I’ve entered the following: (I’m substituting names for everything, so you can get the idea what I’ve done so far) Account name: Main website Your name: Jane Email address: jane@**** In Server Settings Server Type: POP Mail Server Server Name: mail.**** User Name: jane@**** (this is not my main account that I used to sign in cpanel with) In Outgoing Server Server Name: mail.**** I’ve tried using ‘****’ instead of ‘mail.****’ for server names, but all I am able to do is retrieve emails. Am I overlooking something? Quote
TCH-JimE Posted October 16, 2003 Posted October 16, 2003 Hi, Have you checked here: http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/help/netscape.htm Jim Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 16, 2003 Posted October 16, 2003 Hi, if you havent gotten it to work, try using the IP address of the server instead of a server name, for server 34 it is 69.50.194.230 Quote
dreamcloudwolf Posted October 16, 2003 Author Posted October 16, 2003 Have you checked here: http://www.totalchoicehosting.com/help/netscape.htm Already checked, and searched the forums for Netscape problems. Hi, if you havent gotten it to work, try using the IP address of the server instead of a server name, for server 34 it is 69.50.194.230 I've subsituted the IP address for both Server names in Server Settings and Outgoing Server. No go. When I opened Mail & Newsgroups to view my email, I still received warning messages about Certified Authority - I forget what it says, it was a little different than the original message about Certified Authority. If you want details of that warning message, let me know 'cuz I need to exit Netscape to get the message to pop up again. I tried again to send mail from the account with IP address as Server name, I got the following: Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent because connecting to SMTP server 69.50.194.230 failed. The server may be unavailble or is refusing SMTP connections. Please verify that your SMTP server setting is correct and try again, or else contact your network administrator. I've been thinking. Where does Horde get the emails from? It's webmail right? Does Horde get and sends email from mail.****? Quote
Guest schussat Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 Hi dreamcloudwolf- A couple of things come to mind regarding your outgoing mail problem: 1) Have you checked the "use secure connection" option when setting up your SMTP server? That may make the difference. (I'm not using Netscape mail, so I'm winging it here a little.) 2) It's possible (and especially likely if you're on a broadband connection) that your ISP blocks outgoing port 25 -- which is the SMTP port. Try checking the use secure connection option, AND change your SMTP server to mail.****:26. This should result in your being prompted for your mail password when you send email (presumably with an option to bypass the password prompt the next time). Also, retrieving your mail from your domain (which sounds like it's working fine) is functionally distinct from sending mail. Keep in mind that when you use Netscape to retrieve mail, you're not really retriving it from Horde; you're using the POP3 protocol to fetch your mail, and even though the mail is in the same place as when you retrieve it via Horde, you're really doing something different. That said, you can try replacing your SMTP server with your ISP's own mail server, whatever that happens to be. You should still be able to send outgoing email with the you@****** address. Hope this helps. -Alan Quote
dreamcloudwolf Posted October 17, 2003 Author Posted October 17, 2003 Have you checked the "use secure connection" option when setting up your SMTP server?Yes, the "use secure connection" is on. Try checking the use secure connection option, AND change your SMTP server to mail.****:26. It won't accept ":26" part of server name. I'm using DSL and a router hub. Am still stuck on this. Any other ideas? Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 keep in mind "use secure connection" and "my server requires authentication" are two seperate things. Most ISP's dont support using a secure connection, especially if it is connecting to a server that isnt theres. It sounds to me like it is trying to make a secure connection but it cant because your ISP doesnt support it, try it with "use a secure connection" unchecked. If there is an option for "my server requires authentication" try it both ways, with it off and with it on. And lastly, maybe your ISP just doesnt allow you to use an SMTP server that isnt their own, if all else fails set your outgoing (SMTP) server name to whatever it is for your isp, you will still be able to send and recieve e-mail from your domain's e-mail account. TCH-Dick Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 I just downloaded netscape 7 in your mail propeties on outgoing server SMTP on the use secure connection option set that to never and give it a try, you can also specify the port right below the server name, some ISP's block port 25 so you can try 26 Quote
dreamcloudwolf Posted October 17, 2003 Author Posted October 17, 2003 Excellent!! Adding port number 26 to 'Outgoing Server' did the trick! I didn't have to uncheck "use secure connection" for it works with and without secure connection. Thank you! Thumbs Up Quote
dreamcloudwolf Posted October 17, 2003 Author Posted October 17, 2003 Although, I still get those pop up message about certified authority. When I click on View Certificate, it says it's likely to be server34@totalhostingchoice.com, so I just ignore it from now on? Quote
TCH-Dick Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 The reason you are getting those warnings is because the site certificate doesnt match your mail server name, you can just ignore them Quote
Guest schussat Posted October 17, 2003 Posted October 17, 2003 keep in mind "use secure connection" and "my server requires authentication" are two seperate things. Whoops. Thanks for that clarification -- I realized when I read it that I had conflated them. I was really thinking about authentication. Long day, fuzzy brain. -Alan Quote
