This stupid Swen virus was the last straw and provided that I find another good email client, I'm ready to bid Outlook farewell!

Please let me know if you have a good email client or know of one.. I'm looking for four things...

-Free

-No Ads

-Able to Work with Multiple POP3 Accounts (Not A MUST, but certainly a plus!!)

-I'm able to upload my old emails from my Outlook (Not A MUST, but certainly a plus!!)

Of course if you know how to block the annoying Swen virus emails without emailing everyone I know and telling them to remove me from their address book... That would do!

I know I'm asking a lot... AND THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH!!

Hi Eric-

I haven't used an email client on Windows in quite a while, but I used to be a big fan of Pegasus Mail. It deals with multiple POP accounts and is pretty sophisticated. I imagine it will import all your old mail files (with some converstion necessary, perhaps). You may also want to give Mozilla Thunderbird a look. It's still pretty alpha, but it's coming along quickly and I've heard some good reports about it. (Alternatively, you might also try the full-on Mozilla mail application. It's part of the much larger mozilla package, but is also more mature than Thunderbird.) I recently read some favorable things about The Bat, but it's shareware with a 30-day demo. Eudora Light is still free, and probably worth a download.

Hope this helps!

Eric,

Am I lost? That wouldn't be completely unfathomable, but why would you ditch your email client because of a virus? Beef up your antivirus protection and you should be able to continue with Outlook. I'm using AVG (which is free) for anti-virus protection and it certifies incoming and outgoing mail as virus free or removes it. I am using Outlook.

Enlighten me. If there is an obnoxious risk associated with Outlook that I haven't seen, please share so that I can be proactive too.

Thanks!

I think for clarification, most virus are made for Windows. I have used Outlook and OE for years in one form or another. Before I got AVG when it was recommended a few months back I hadn't used Antivirus software. In that time I hadn't had my computer infected either. Just be smart about the email you get.

Lets take the last issue you were talking about, Sven. Just because you got the email doesn't mean you are infected. "Sven" my wife got one I just deleted it. No infection.

Something you may want to consider as well that was recommended is Mail Washer. I have been using it and can see what is being sent and it gives me a bit of the message without me ever downloading it. I can have it deleted right there and never have it make it to my email client.

Nothing wrong with changing what you are using. Just don't do it in the hopes that you are totally safe. If they want to get you it wont matter what you are using. If everybody used Linux you would see many more virus written for it instead.

Not to bash anyone but I wouldn't write a virus to exploit a MAC because I wouldn't get the recognition from it. Should I infect 100 million users on Windows or the ten on a MAC.

Of course you could use squirrel mail right here on your TCH home... viruses and trojans can't cause outlook or another mail program to trigger anything if there is no client. You need to watch for HTML messages but I'm pretty sure the options allow you to turn that off.

Just a thought.

Eric, just wondering what you are using to protect yourself:

What anti-virus program, version, how is it updated?

What fire wall

software or hardware, security mode (full or medium)?

I use Norton 2000, as I am always on, it updates automatically

for a firewall, I use the free Zone Alarm with local and Internet security at full to cloak my computer. And it will ask me before allowing a new program to connect, like a Trojan trying to email with its own SMTP.

I have only seen one virus through email, and all I saw was that Norton had quarantined it, I could only see the headers.

It indicated it was from my Dad, who no longer had Internet. So it came from some one that had his old address in their address book.
