Hello,

I am looking for a new web host for my site, which is primarily for an open source course management system called Moodle. I recently adopted this software to provide an online complement for my English Language classes at my university here in Korea where I am a visiting professor. The site will need to host a number of courses comprising over one hundred students starting in September.

I have narrowed my search down to two web hosts and you are one of them! I want to ask you some questions to help me decide which one I should finally choose.

My main issue concerns the need to have as much control over technical aspects of my site as possible. The following are some of the technical issues I will be faced with in installing the moodle software on your server.

1. I need to have some way of transferring the data files from my old server to the new one and then untarring them. Unless I have some kind of SSH access then this will require me to download the files to my computer and then upload them again, which is time-consuming and fiddly.

2. I will soon be installing the new version of this software, which is 1.1 (thus I will be unable to use the Fantastico installer, which doesn’t support this version). Then I will need to be able untar the installation file directly on the server. I also need to be able to automatically archive directories for backup purposes. Will this be possible?

3. I need to be able to set the owner of my moodle data directory to the web server (“apache” or “nobody”). I doubt I can change ownership like this via the cPanel and will probably need SSH access to do it.

4. I need to check certain settings in the httpd.conf and php.ini files. Will I have access to these?

5. I need PHP version 4.1.0 or later, with the following settings:

o GD library turned ON, with support for JPG and PNG formats

o Sessions support turned ON

o File uploading turned ON

o Safe Mode must be turned OFF

I would really appreciate it if you would clarify these issues for me so that I can have an idea of how flexible your service would be for my needs. I am only too aware of the need to have security in mind with regard to SSH type access, however I feel I need this functionality and would like to have it as part of my hosting package. Is this possible?

Thanks in advance, Tim. ;)

We could not satisfy your needs on a shared server level. Sorry. Your are just after to many customized needs.

Your best fit would be on a dedicated server.

Hi,

Thank you very much for your prompt reply.

Unfortunately, a dedicated server is beyond my budget. I am doing this on my own and have no support from my university. All the money comes out of my own pocket.

I have been led to believe that some people at TCH have experience installing Moodle. So if I can't have all the features I requested, would it be possible to have some assistance from TCH in installing the software? There have been a number of recommendations for TCH in the Moodle forums and I am still interested in the possibility of you hosting my site.

Also, would you approve my having Jailshell access?

Thank you once again in advance,

Tim.

Hi,

I am working in Daejeon, which is in the center of the country, about 2 hours south of Seoul.

Of course I know Kwangju. I assume he is teaching in a private institute?

I have been here for 18 months now and really like teaching at a university, although sometimes the different culture is a little difficult to adapt to. :(

Yeah, my son is in a private school working mainly with Middle School aged kids. He's been there almost two months and I think the culture shock was more than he expected. We lived in Colombia for several years when he was a teenager so he thought he would have no problem with that but Korea is much different than the US or Colombia and being an adult is not like being a teen.

We'd like to visit over Christmas break and are looking into it.
