Guest borfast
Hi everyone. I'd like to know what's the difference between the Unmanaged and the Fully Managed packages on the dedicated servers. Also, how does this dedicated server thing works? Is it like renting a server and then accessing it by telnet so I can do whatever I want just like if it was my own computer? What about the operating system, do I have to install it myself (don't think so) or do you guys install it? If I have to install it myself how do I do it? Thanks in advance Edited August 10, 2004 by TCH-Raul
knucklehead
Unamanged indicates that we setup the server and hand you a username and password. We will maintain the hardware end of it and update the Operating System but thats it. Everything else is on you. Fully managed means we do everything. If your not a linux guru then this is your best bet. Yes dedicated server is all yours. You do what you want with it as long as its within our Terms of Use. We will setup the OS and Cpanel/WHM on all dedicated servers this you dont need to worry about. Thanks
borfast
OK, I've got one more question about this, since I'm trying to decide whether I go for a dedicated server or not: How does the "semi-dedicated" package works?
Head Guru
Semi-Dedicated is a very large reseller server. You share the server with up to five other clients and no more. You dont get root access and its more like a reseller account with tons of space. Thanks
borfast
OK, that's what I thought Just a heads-up: on the dedicated servers page you have: "* Semi-Dedicated Servers are shared with no more than four clients." but you said no more than 5 other clients. If you weren't mistaken, then you have a small error on the dedicated servers page. Anyway, thanks for all the information I'm almost sure I'll buy a semi dedicated account. One last thing I forgot in the last message: If I buy a semi-dedicated server, can I upgrade my account to a normal dedicated server later on? Thanks again *edit* I'm sorry, I forgot one other thing: I suppose that with a dedicated server I can host as many domains as I want, am I correct? On the dedicated servers page it only says "Your Own Domain Name --- YES" so I'm not sure if I can only host one...
borfast
It seems I always forget to ask something... Besides the other questions I posted above (could someone answer them, please?), I have one other question for you about dedicated servers: what exactly do you guys manage in the fully managed packages? Do you only install the OS or do you also install Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc... ? And do you apply patches, etc, or do I have to do it myself? (I suppose I'll have to do these myself...) Thanks again
borfast
I'm sorry to insist but could someone please answer my questions? I'm going to have to make a decision soon and I'd like to be well informed. To make things simple, here's all my questions grouped in a list: 1 - If I buy a semi-dedicated server, can I upgrade my account to a normal dedicated server later on? 2 - I suppose that with a dedicated server I can host as many domains as I want, am I correct? On the dedicated servers page it only says "Your Own Domain Name --- YES" so I'm not sure if I can host as many as I want or just one... 3 - What exactly do you guys manage in the fully managed packages? Do you only install the OS or do you also install Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc... ? And do you apply patches, etc, or do I have to do it myself? Thanks again and forgive me for being such a pain
Lianna
Borfast, Wow, I'm really sorry that your post and questions slipped right through without an answer! 1 - If I buy a semi-dedicated server, can I upgrade my account to a normal dedicated server later on?Yes, you can upgrade at any time. 2 - I suppose that with a dedicated server I can host as many domains as I want, am I correct? On the dedicated servers page it only says "Your Own Domain Name --- YES" so I'm not sure if I can host as many as I want or just one... Yes, with a dedicated server, you can host as many domains as can reasonably be hosted in your bandwidth and space constraints. 3 - What exactly do you guys manage in the fully managed packages? Do you only install the OS or do you also install Apache, PHP, MySQL, etc... ? And do you apply patches, etc, or do I have to do it myself? Fully Managed means that we treat it like any of the servers that we sell individual packages onto. In other words, the works: OS, Apache, PHP, MySQL, cPanel, WebHostManager, monitoring, etc. We would apply patches to the supplied components as needed or available. Again, I apologize for letting your questions go unanswered. I hope this helps. Lianna
borfast
No problem, Lianna. I'm not in that much of a hurry I guess that's all I need to know. Well, at least for now... Thanks a lot Raúl
