boxturt Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 (feel free to move) I do not recall seeing this type of entry in the logs before. At least not so many. There are over 500 different versions of this all occurring one after the other from a single IP belonging to Abovenet Communications. /band.html/band_bylaws.html/united_arts.html/band.html Http Code: 200 Date: May 01 01:59:12 Http Version: HTTP/1.0 Size in Bytes: 20733 Referer: - Agent: - I don't like it cause it uses bandwidth obviously but I'm curious as to what it means. Any input would be appreciated. Quote
Kevan Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 I have seen similar entries in my log too. It's as if the requesting {whatever} is appending page names after page names. I have entries like /link_page.htm/contact.htm yet the results are 404 (not found errors) I have a valid link_page.htm and a valid contact.htm page but no page named in the request. I just chalked it up to a browser issue on someone's computer. Quote
abinidi Posted May 1, 2006 Posted May 1, 2006 If you are worried about the bandwith, you can always block the IP address. Quote
boxturt Posted May 2, 2006 Author Posted May 2, 2006 I can try to ban them but they have a very large IP range so it might be difficult. I'm not going to worry too much about it but I do find it curious AboveNet Communications is the ISP that provides other Internet service providers and businesses with faster, more direct and reliable access to the Web. Known as the ISP of ISP's, AboveNet is the architect of a one-hop global network that brings together bandwidth content sites, ISP's and Application Service Providers (ASPs) into centralized co-location facilities. TCH-JimE Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 It may be generated from a poorly put together link in someone elses web page. Make sure you have a 404 error page to let them know that whatever they where looking for, its not there! JimE Quote
boxturt Posted May 2, 2006 Author Posted May 2, 2006 Hi Jim, I do have a 404 in place but it is serving pages ( http code 200 ) So I decided to try it and it does serve the first page refered in the string however it is badly broken. So now I'm thinking I need to create a rule so that any url that has a wierd url like that will indeed get a 404 but that my not be necessary. I'll keep my eyes open to see if it happens again. Quote
abinidi Posted May 2, 2006 Posted May 2, 2006 I can try to ban them but they have a very large IP range so it might be difficult. Sorry. You said in your first post that it was a single IP, so I thought it would be easy to block... Quote
boxturt Posted May 2, 2006 Author Posted May 2, 2006 Hey, that's ok - I should have been more clear in the first post. Being that it traces back to an ISP there isn't really much I can do. Quote
