Vintage Lover Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I really am dense when it comes to setting this up. I have spent at leat 6 hours trying to do this and I do not know what I am doing. I tried to set up a user and database and all that, but I think I am doing something wrong. Can someone give me a link to where I can find VERY detailed instructions? I tried to follow instructions found on another thread but I still goofed. example : password-what password? any old password? password give to me by totalchoice? what should the database name be? what should the username be? can I pick my own names? do i have to follow the format that was give in other threads? Please help me. I am getting ready to pay a design company to just install it for me!!!!!!!!!!!!! now bald, Sandra Quote
TCH-Rob Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 When you create a database in your cPanel you call it what you want to. Make a user for it and call it what you want to. Password, whatever you want it to be. After you have created the database and user, add the user to the database and then the name will always be cpanel-name_database-name and cpanel-name_user-name, just as the format in the other threads. The password will always just be whatever you named it. Too confusing? Don't pay anyone to set up a database for you, PM me and I can take you through it step-by-step, after I get up in the morning that is. Quote
Vintage Lover Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 Ok i think I got it to work. but who is Ponce De Leon, besides the obvious guy, and why does he have stuff on my commerce site? is this the template I am supposed to follow? Also: why is my os commerce site located at http://debutanteclothing.com/shop/admin/ca...ies.php?cPath=1 instead of http://www.debutanteclothing.com/shop/admi...ies.php?cPath=1 I just placed it in a file called: /shop Quote
TCH-Andy Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 Your oscommerce site is at http://www.debutanteclothing.com/shop/ it's just the admin /setup site that is at the link you provided. That is just a template, to show you the idea - you can delete or replace all that stuff. Quote
Vintage Lover Posted January 4, 2006 Author Posted January 4, 2006 Thanks Rob and Andy! last question for tonight: How do I set my oscommerce site so it is NOT live? I don't want anyone to see it yet. Sandra Quote
TCH-Andy Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 I'm not familiar enough with OScommerce to tell you exactly where the option is in admin section. I'd cheat, and do it a different way. Check what your IP address is http://whatismyip.com/ then add the following to your .htaccess in the /sales directory (remember to do it in that directory - you don't want to block access for your whole site) >order deny, allow allow from xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx deny from all where you replace the xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx with your IP address. Then you will be the only one with access You can easily remove it afterwards. Quote
vengavenga Posted January 4, 2006 Posted January 4, 2006 (edited) Hi Sandra, I work every day with osCommerce and I'm sure you'll love it once you get your head around it all. Rob is right - it's not worth paying someone just to install the standard store for you - much better that you accept Robs kind offer of talking you through the set up. The more you understand about how it all works, the easier it will be for you to add extra modules and customize the look of the store. In answer to one of your other questions ... but who is Ponce De Leon, besides the obvious guy, and why does he have stuff on my commerce site? Harald Ponce De Leon is the person who leads the team that develop osCommerce. His name appears on in the store (along with all those products that you see) just as test data. It gives you a chance to see how everything works and play around with things in your admin area. When you are ready to add your own products, you can easily change all of this info in your osCommerce admin area. Hope that helps, Ali. Edited January 4, 2006 by vengavenga Quote
Vintage Lover Posted January 5, 2006 Author Posted January 5, 2006 Well, it helped a ton! I got OS commerce up and running: www.debutanteclothing.com/shop but now I have a few questions: 1. What's the easiest way to change the "look" of the store. having difficulty with that. 2. How do I secure it? 3. How do I keep it hidden so there isn't public access? Sandra Quote
TCH-Rob Posted January 5, 2006 Posted January 5, 2006 1. http://www.devarticles.com/c/a/Web-Authori...ing-osCommerce/, this may assist with changes. 2. The following site can show how to secure your osC store; http://oscdox.com/modules.php?op=modload&n...%20Installation 3. You could follow Andys' advice above OR password protect the directories Quote
