stevevan Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Well, for those of us in the US, the National Hockey League and it's players have solved their labor differences and the season is up and running. I was able to watch 3 games in the last week or so, and one of them was even on High Definition TV (one of the main reason I bought the set!). While I didn't miss the cancelled season of last year (I still had a local minor league hockey team), it is nice to see it back. The only drawback I can see so far is that their TV contract is with the Outdoor Life cable channel instead of ESPN. (Maybe I can get Hockey Night in Canada off of a satelite?) For those of you who are wondering what all of the fuss is about, I would encourage you to watch just one period of play. It's not the same slow game anymore. It is very fast and, based upon scores from the first week of the season alone, the number of goals scored are going to be much, MUCH higher. So, while I really didn't miss it, BOY AM I GLAD IT'S BACK! Go Tampa Bay Lightning! Quote
Head Guru Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Oh Steve you said it all so right. What is up with these yahoo's on OLN? Where did they get that set from? Just awful. Looks like some local cable provider filming a high school football game. Just awful. I LOVE the new rules. I really like keeping the goalie in the crease and not out in the corners really opened up the game. Anyways Go Wings! Quote
Gail Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 Go Montreal Canadians - they have been my team since the days of Rocket Richard and company. Now I am showing my age. These past years - I actually follow our local Ontario Hockey League team (which has sent more players to the NHL than any other team) more than I do the NHL. The game does seem to be improved so far this year but I would still like to see fewer teams. I also hope the Refs continue to call the penalties and don't go back to their old ways - allowing all the clutching and grabbing. Maybe now the less skilled players will get weeded out. Gail Quote
perfectdreams Posted October 12, 2005 Posted October 12, 2005 I used to be a fan of hockey (Mighty Ducks, ), but the strike ruined it for me, same as it did when MLB did theirs. Though, hockey had more of a reason than MLB, though. I'm glad to hear it's back though. Quote
stevevan Posted October 12, 2005 Author Posted October 12, 2005 Perfectdreams: Give the "new look" NHL a try...if only for one period. It is almost like watching it back in the 1980's. (Now I'm showing MY age! ) The slow pace is all but gone and it's really a lot more exciting to watch! Quote
perfectdreams Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Well, in the 80's I was only a little tot (quite literally, ). I'm not sure if we get it on basic stations (CBS, NBC, ABC are all we get ). I'll check it out once we get cable I enjoyed the blood bash, sadly enough, . Quote
stevevan Posted October 13, 2005 Author Posted October 13, 2005 Either NBC or ABC will have some games in January. Quote
perfectdreams Posted October 13, 2005 Posted October 13, 2005 Well, then I'll definitely check it out Quote
stevevan Posted October 22, 2005 Author Posted October 22, 2005 Our local ECHL (minor league) team had it's home opener last night. Wow...what a difference! Apparently the ECHL is still using last year's rules. The game featured a lot of problems that the NHL put an end to and as a result it was very slow. Still, it's hockey and being able to see it played in person without paying the equivelant of a car payment is refreshing. Unfortunately, Greenville (SC) beat us. Thanks, Rick! Quote
