hooksie Posted June 4, 2005 Posted June 4, 2005 (edited) Hello there everyone. I'v recently moved my site to a new host. However, that host did not meet my expectations, and severely disapointed me in quite a few ways, and I would like to verify that wont happan here, as well as ask a few questions. First, how often are there unscheduled downtimes, and when was the last one? How often does mqSQL fail, and if it has, when was the last time? Load times wont increase drastically when i use a php include script on the page, correct? (seems like a strange thing, but my site is crawling on my current host when php includes are used) Whats the processing power of the average server? How often are there large amounts of lag? And for more general hosting questions, would cpanel here have all the same features as the one my current host has, including fantasico? Is it okay to host multiple sites on a virtual hosting plan with subdomains, just not have domains for them? (example friends-site.mysite.com) How fast does FTP transfer? Thanks for any help in advance. If you guys are what I'm looking for in a host, I look forward to doing business with you -Matthew Edited June 4, 2005 by hooksie Quote
TCH-Andy Posted June 4, 2005 Posted June 4, 2005 Hi Matthew, Welcome to the forum First, how often are there unscheduled downtimes, and when was the last one? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Scheduled downtimes are probably once every couple of years - to replace a hard disk, or move the server ... apart from the occasional reboot (which will take a few mins) with over 100 servers - do you mean the last time ever on the last time on a given server. Overall server availability is over 99.9% How often does mqSQL fail, and if it has, when was the last time? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> On the average server - probably once every few months. However, it is monitiored every second - and hence soon back online. Load times wont increase drastically when i use a php include script on the page, correct? (seems like a strange thing, but my site is crawling on my current host when php includes are used) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> That depends how poorly written your PHP script is Generally a php include is not a problem at all. However, if you have lots of them, including from external points - then that would cause issues. Whats the processing power of the average server? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Quad Xeon processors - 2.4GHz - so very fast How often are there large amounts of lag? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I'm not sure I understand the question - do you mean routing issues ? Or lag where ? would cpanel here have all the same features as the one my current host has, including fantasico? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> We do not include fantastico - no Is it okay to host multiple sites on a virtual hosting plan with subdomains, just not have domains for them? (example friends-site.mysite.com) <{POST_SNAPBACK}> From our Acceptable Use Policy; Your subdomains are allowed to be used for any legal purpose. You may not sell the subdomain space to others, nor may you point other domain names to your subfolders. How fast does FTP transfer? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Basically, as fast as your ISP connection allows. Quote
stevevan Posted June 4, 2005 Posted June 4, 2005 Welcome to the forums. If you look through the forums here, you'll find a whole "family" willing to help with nearly any problem. Downtimes are kept to a minimum. And in the event of (gasp) downtime, how many other hosting sites have the OWNER post notices on the forum about what's going on? I hope you'll make the decision to come to TCH. As someone who's been involved with ISPs and web hosting for a number of years, I don't plan on leaving here any time soon! Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 4, 2005 Posted June 4, 2005 Welcome to the forum, Matthew As you see we are like a family here, if you help, just ask. Quote
hooksie Posted June 4, 2005 Author Posted June 4, 2005 I'm not sure I understand the question - do you mean routing issues ? Or lag where ?I meant how often do the servers slow down drastically, or something occur on your end that would result in long load times That depends how poorly written your PHP script is wink.gifGenerally a php include is not a problem at all. However, if you have lots of them, including from external points - then that would cause issues. most all of my includes I beleive are local, however i think i should check on them just to find that out. I got an update from my current webhost at their forums telling the users witht eh slowdown problems that its probably mySQL usage thats slowing the server, so my new question is does that even happan here? And thanks for all you help so far Quote

hooksie Posted June 4, 2005 Author Posted June 4, 2005 (edited) Well the slowdown's apparently pretty widespread among customers at my current host, so i doubt its something I'm doing And i love the response time on the questions. One more thing. You said you didnt offer fantastico, however, would the rest of the features i have in cpanel still be there? I'd give you my cpanel version number, however my host is going so slow I cant even get to cpanel. () EDIT: My cpanel build is "10.2.0-RELEASE 82" I thought of just a few more things i needed to ask. How many ftp acounts can I create? How many email addresses do i get? Edited June 4, 2005 by hooksie Quote
TCH-Rob Posted June 4, 2005 Posted June 4, 2005 You get unlimited FTP and Email accounts. I believe we are running cPanel 10.2.0-RELEASE 25 Quote
hooksie Posted June 5, 2005 Author Posted June 5, 2005 (edited) Thanks a lot. You'v all been very helpful. And just one more request. Do you think any of you could point me to some independant sites that have reviewed TCH? And perhaps point me to some sites that use tch, so i can just see how well a site other than your main site and forums here runs? (although the latter is not completely neccessary) Edited June 5, 2005 by hooksie Quote
GroovyFish Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 Hi Matthew, welcome to the forums! You can find reviews of TCH at Findmyhosting.com (http://www.findmyhosting.com/detail.asp?host=5330&plan=16814&pos=1&sid=961017&ty=0) Click on the Full Details of the rating to see actual reviews. That's how I found my way here nearly two years ago. Quote
hooksie Posted June 5, 2005 Author Posted June 5, 2005 Thank you for all your help. Just ooooone more question. Do you include phpmyadmin? Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 Yes you have PhpMyAdmin in cpanel at the bottom of MySql where you create your databases and then use PhpMyAdmin to edit or what ever. You can see some of the sites hosted here by looking at our family sites Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 If you would like to see some sites hosted here you can visit our Hosting Family pages. Quote
Deverill Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 Welcome to the forums Matthew. I look forward to welcoming you to the family soon... I haven't found anything better than TotalChoice. It's not because I'm a mod on the forums that I think that ... it's because I think that there's none better that is the reason I'm a mod here. If you have any further questions just ask and if you do decide to move your accounts here the techs can probably move your sites for you since your old system uses Cpanel - enter a help desk ticket if you'd like them to take a look after you sign up. Take care! Quote
hooksie Posted June 5, 2005 Author Posted June 5, 2005 Again, thank you all for your superb assistance. I'v completed my order, and look forward to using TCH Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 Wahoo don't forget to drop by the introductions forum when you get settled in Quote
hooksie Posted June 5, 2005 Author Posted June 5, 2005 (edited) Just curious, but is the phone call comming today or tommorow? Given the fact its 9:30, I suppose it will be tommorow? Edited June 5, 2005 by hooksie Quote
TCH-Don Posted June 5, 2005 Posted June 5, 2005 Hard to say, its possible depends on who is around. Quote
