Adding A Forum

Recommended Posts

I just signed up and have uploaded all my existing files. However, before transferring the DNS to TCH from my current host, I'd like to have the forum all set up and ready to go.

I've downloaded the phpBB files from my Cpanel, but I'm not sure what to do next? Especially since it's pre-propogation.

Help?

Thanks,

Nan

Not sure what you mean by "downloaded the phpBB files"--there is nothing to "download"--all you have to do is go into cpanel and tell it where you want the forum to be placed at (must be top level, but it explains all of that) --it does the rest for you.

After that, you just have to go into the admin panel of the forum and set it up the way you like (categories/forums/etc) and make any changes to the themes or whatnot.

The user guide will help considerably, or go to the forums at www.phpbb.com and check out what they have over there.

I don't know if it will affect anything since it hasnt propagated yet--I'm sure there are others who will know that answer

Thanks, but ...

Guess I didn't make myself clear enough. :(

I did as suggested -- went to Cpanel and got the phpBB files.

Now, according to the phpBB manual, ...

"Once all the files have been uploaded to your site you should point your browser to this location, eg. http://www.mysite.tld/phpBB2 or http://subdomain.mysite.tld/, etc. Of course replace these with the real location! Everything from this point is fully automated."

Since I haven't changed the DNS, I can only access my site through the IP # with my user name (http://IP#/~username).

So how do I get to the phpBB2 location as suggested above?

Hope I'm clear this time. :D

So it sounds like you have NO forum right now, but want to set one up?

If so--there is nothing to "download" and the phpBB manual is a little confusing there, because it doesnt take into account the capablilities that TCH offers.

In cPanel, if you click on "Bulletin Board" in the add-ons section, it will automatically setup everything you need in the folder/subdomain you choose. There is no need to upload anything to any remote server.

If you can access your cpanel, you can set up your forum--it will (by default) end up at www.yoursitenamehere.com/forum

You can see all the files by using file manager (in cpanel) by navigating to the public_html folder, where you will then see a folder entitled "forum"

The phpBB manual assumes that you don't have a kick-butt hosting company that gives you auto setup scripts, and will be doing it all manually

Hope this helps,

Jim

OK, one more time.

I went to my Cpanel, clicked on Bulletin Board, filled in the blank of where I wanted the files, and clicked "Install." That part is done. OK?

And yes, I understand that the program "will (by default) end up at www.yoursitenamehere.com/forum."

Therein lies the problem. Since I have not propagated my site to TCH (it's still on what will soon be my 'old' server), I CANNOT type in www.mysitename.com/forum and retrieve the phpBB admin page.

Since I have not yet switched DNS, the only way I can access my site through TCH is by typing in http://IP#/~username.

I tried typing http://IP#/~username/forum ... but I got an "Action Canceled" page.

Maybe I should send a help ticket ... but I hoped someone here could help.

OK, now I at least understand the problem--unfortunately, I'm not sure if it's possible to do before transferring the DNS and waiting for everything to propagate.

Best bet might just be a help desk ticket

Sorry I couldn't be of more help :D

If http://IP#/~username

loads your site then http://IP#/~username/forum

or whatever folder you created should load your forum.

You may want to goto your cpanel then file manager

click on the icon for public_html and check to see if the forum folder is there or if its name is different than you think.

If this does not work, then perhaps a help desk ticket is in order.

Hang in there, the people here are very helpful.

And welcome to the family :D

PHEW! Sure glad we finally got that cleared up. :(

Thanks so much for your input. Kinda' looks like I'll be turning to the Help Desk.

Thank you also for the welcome. I did a LOT of research before I chose TCH because the site I'm moving is my main site, i.e. the one that brings in the money.

A factor that played a big part in my decision was the Forum. I like being able to go somewhere to ask a quick question (and get an answer) without having to wait for Support to respond. No matter how fast they are, when something not working, it's never fast enough. Right? :D

Thanks again,

Nan
