jhollin1138 Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 (edited) Since I couldn't find the a place to post TCH forum related issues, I figured this might have to do. Now it might be the fact that I this is the only forum I visit that uses this software, so I might have missed hoe to do it. How do I edit my own posts? Edit: Ok, I can edit my posts in this forum. Why can't I edit them in "Scripting Talk" and "HTML and CSS"? I am sure there are more, those are the only I found so far. Edited May 27, 2005 by jhollin1138 Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 There´s a time limit on editing your own post. I don´t remember how long now though. As for how to do it, if you want to edit your post within this timelimit, there should be a "edit" button to the right below the post. Quote

What if someone posted something that they later discover an error in. They can't make the correction? What if someone wants to add a thought to an existing post, adding a new post might not make the most sense, they can't? That makes no sense to me. Quote

The reason for the time limit is to keep continuity. If someone posted something and then someone responded and then the original post was edited the response may no longer make sense. You can always enter a followup post stating the correction referring to the original post. You can even quote the original post which would help. Quote

It leaves allot to the author to make the determination to best course of action (whether to edit or post again). Sometimes the author of the post may want to delete/edit an entry post as a retraction, sorry you can't. I "actively" post on 5 or 6 other forums (including my own forum) and I have never ran into not being able edit my own posts until now. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 If you want something changed or deleted and you cannot do because of the time limit, contact one of the moderators and ask them to do it for you. If your request does not break the flow of the thread your request will be carried out. Quote

TweezerMan Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 Sometimes the author of the post may want to delete/edit an entry post as a retraction, sorry you can't. <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I personally find it irritating to see a thread with 4-5 responses, and the person who started the thread deleted everything in the original post after the replies were posted, replacing it with something like "Never mind." The time limit on editing prevents that from occurring (for the most part). Quote
marie b. Posted May 27, 2005 Posted May 27, 2005 I used to be a moderator for a chat-client company, and that was my biggest pet peeve. Of course, a bigger pet peeve would be when the original post was edited to contain all the suggestions I'd made, so I looked like a complete schlep who couldn't read. Quote
Samrc Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 Used to be when you edited a post, you could set it to not say you edited the post. I can't seem to find that setting again. I am a poor typist so I often post then when I re-visit, I find strange words that seemed to have come from my keyboard. I would like to be able to edit my own post without everyone knowing that I corrected speling or somthin. -Samantha Quote
TweezerMan Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 When you edit a post, the setting is right above the "Submit Modified Post" and "Preview Post" buttons. It is a checkbox labelled "Add the 'Edit by' line in this post?". I'm not sure if that option has been disabled for regular forums users (as a moderator, that option is always enabled for me). Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted May 29, 2005 Posted May 29, 2005 The option is disabled for forum members. Only mods have the ability to uncheck the box. This was changed when version 2.0 of IPB was installed. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 These options were changed due to previous problems and will not be changed back. Quote
Samrc Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 ok. Then a general apology re all my poorly typed, non-spell checked responses in the future. -Samantha Quote
TCH-Rob Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 Samantha, Not good enough. I want one for each time you mess up in the future. I believe you can get spell checkers for both Firefox and IE. Should be Spellbound and ieSpell. Quote
TweezerMan Posted May 30, 2005 Posted May 30, 2005 Maybe we could change the text that is displayed when Samantha edits a post with a typo: This post has been edited by Samrc (I'm sorry!): Today, 06:05 PM Quote
