Pierce Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Ok, hopefully I'm posting in the correct forum. I have a Vb board and was contemplating adding what they call the vbulletin radio. I have been told by them that it is perfectly legal, because my users would in no way be able to access the songs, so they could not download them, steal them etc, just listen to them. Before I did anything, I wanted to check to see if this is ok. Essentially you can add songs to a player, that I have purchased (the songs), and then my members would be able to listen to them as they post. My theory, when in doubt, ask my host. I apologize if this issue has been delt with before, but i searched a couple times, and couldn't find anything relating to this (I was told to post here by the online support team) I know many forums already use this, perhaps I am just a bit paranoid - but better to be safe than sorry! Christopher <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think, legally speaking, you would be required to pay an ASCAP fee on any song you played. This is the royalty fee radio stations pay on every song they play to be able to rebroadcast it. I don't know for sure though, the rules may not have caught up with the internet yet... Quote
TCH-BillH Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Hi, On your comments I think I would need some clarification ... Do you intend to stream the music from your TCH account? Quote
Pierce Posted May 3, 2005 Author Posted May 3, 2005 Hi, On your comments I think I would need some clarification ... Do you intend to stream the music from your TCH account? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I think so, I really havent dealt with this kind of audio issue, so I'm not sure though.. Essentially I think its like a radio blog, so the music would be converted to RBS format, and then hidden behind an "index.php" to block people from seeing your /sounds. They would access it through a flash player, so they could listen to it, but not be able to download or upload the music. If you want to know more about it, this is the link to the VB . org thread. You may be able to find more about it there than i know. http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread....highlight=radio does that help? Chris Quote
youneverknow Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 According to the web site "Legal? Yes no one can access or save the songs, so as long as you have bought them and the songs are yours its 100% Safe" but, youneverknow Quote
Guest Serpentine Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Well, if you are streaming from your shared server then my guess would be no. Uses too many resources and would blow your bandwidth in no time. Quote
TCH-BillH Posted May 3, 2005 Posted May 3, 2005 Hi again, The reason why I asked about the streaming music is because we only allow HTTP streaming on our servers. It is abusive for the rest of the accounts to use other forms of streaming on our virtual accounts To protect them, if we see that you are streaming music, we will suspend your account. We do offer dedicated servers that are better equiped for this purpose. Sorry if I'm the first to break the news to you. But thank you for your understanding. Quote
Pierce Posted May 3, 2005 Author Posted May 3, 2005 Thanks, I wouldnt have known that otherwise, although I do not stream anything, so no worries. Although I have a feeling that would probably blow out my current alloted bandwith in no time, and be server intensive, which is probably why you have put that in place. Dedicated servers, currently looking into them, although I think at the moment there is no rush for me. But thats another issue. Although when that happens, I would be able to stream, but I would still be interested in the legalities of it (well, with music that is). Well, I am an ascap member, perhaps I will just ask my rep about it. Although, ascap isnt the only music liscensing organization, BMI would have to be covered as well. could get complicated and expensive. oh well, i think it woul be a fun option for my members, perhaps its worth it to upgrade to a dedicated server. Ill ponder my options for a while. Cheers, Pierce Quote
