sbpa Posted November 26, 2002 Posted November 26, 2002 I posted my first web site last week but I've been having trouble uploading files. I have 3 computers (WinXP) networked together running a cable broadband connection thru a Linksys (cabled) router. I've tried cpanel, Frontpage, FTPeditor, & easyFTP on all 3 computers. I've tried directly thru the cable modem. All of my uploads time-out or abort after a few seconds. (I can upload sucessfully to other sites, such as photo-sharing sites). I've disabled or uninstalled Norton Internet Security, called my cable company to check the connection (they say it's fine), & been in touch with support here almost every day. Support says that they've downloaded to my site fine, so I must be doing something wrong. I'm running out of ideas so I'd appreciate any help. Quote
Head Guru Posted November 26, 2002 Posted November 26, 2002 I would like to see a traceroute to the server from you. This would tell us if your connection is the cause or at a min. would shed some light on what your connection is doing. When you say time out? Do you mean it slows down and then stops? I pulled your account up. Your on server5. This is a new server and I dont see any other issues of this type being logged. How are you uploading to the server via domain name or Ip address? First thing is lets see that Trace Route Quote
sbpa Posted November 26, 2002 Author Posted November 26, 2002 Using SmartFTP: uploading to spotswoodbands.org; passive mode; tried to upload mp3 file (14,740 kb); after about a minute I get the error: "connection closed. Server timeout. A non-blocking socket operation could not be completed immediately"; 64kb out of a 14,740 file uploaded. I'm uploading from my laptop (I set the DMZ host to the laptop's IP address) -> router -> cable modem -> server Quote
Head Guru Posted November 26, 2002 Posted November 26, 2002 If you could post a traceroute that would help us. Otherwise we have no idea what your connection is doing. Quote
Head Guru Posted November 26, 2002 Posted November 26, 2002 One thing you can do is to see if you get the same error when you connect with the command line ftp client. Go to a DOS prompt (Start->Programs->DOS Prompt) Connect to the site using the following syntax: ftp hostname/IP_address Once successfully connected, you will be prompted for your username and password. Enter your username and password and then type "dir" to make sure that you successfully get a directory listing from the remote site. Once you get a directory listing, (and once you cd to the directory you want on the ftp server) To upload a file: put c:/local_path/filename (enter the exact path of the file that you want to upload here) Or to download a file from the ftp server: get filename (a file that you could see in the directory listing. If you get the same error then the problem is not in SmartFTP. There may be a local firewall blocking the connection or a problem with your ISP's network. If you do not get the error in the command line ftp client then disable "Passive Mode" in the Connection settings in SmartFTP. Quote
Head Guru Posted November 26, 2002 Posted November 26, 2002 Try this in SmartFTP http://smartftp.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3784 Quote
Head Guru Posted November 26, 2002 Posted November 26, 2002 Since you have three computers on your network can you try to upload from a different computer rather than your laptop? Quote
sbpa Posted November 27, 2002 Author Posted November 27, 2002 Please give me an example of what you mean by a traceroute. Thanks for your help. Have a great holiday. Quote

Head Guru Posted November 28, 2002 Posted November 28, 2002 Gotta love that NAC bandwidth, awesome looking traceroute. Well the problem does not appear to lie in the connection route. So, can you try to upload from a different PC on your network. Is this possible. I was thinking, dont worry about loosing out a month of service, we will credit you for the this time. Ok? Try from a different PC and let me know. I am off to eat more turkey. Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Quote

sbpa Posted December 1, 2002 Author Posted December 1, 2002 I finally got this figured out. #1 I had to disable a "network bridge" that had been pre-configured on my laptop. #2 I have to bypass the router & connect directly thru the cable modem. #3 Thanks for your help Quote
