It may be an old post, but as far as I know the answer is still valid - or I wouldn't have linked to it.

As far as backwards compatability, I believe that for the most part it is - but different scripts may have issues. This isn't an area that I'm familiar enough with to say globally. =)

I don't know about running both concurrently, but I suspect that it won't be happening on TCH servers. For sure it would make the server environment a bit more confusiong and ambiguous.

Total Choice Hosting - Where it's at!

As for me, Total Choice Hosting is not where it's at if I do not get PHP5 really really soon. I need a date when the rollout will begin before new year or I will change my host.

BTW, I also need mySQL 4.1.

If you do not want to change all servers, please change one or two and move my account over. I can do without c-panel. Just give me SSH and FTP and I manage. But I can't do any longer without PHP5. I'm having thousands of lines of code written for PHP5 already, just waiting for you to upgrade.

I really do not wish to leave, since uptime, service and everything else has been perfect. But this has become a non-negotiable.

You may want to PM one of the TCH staff. They usually have more knowledge of the inner-workings and plans for the servers than the forum moderators do.

I believe that PHP 5 isn't the most stable of platforms as yet. I don't believe many hosts has upgraded yet. When we just upgraded to 4.3.10, it broke my UFM Mail form so that kinda got me worried (until I found the fix yay!) and I really don't want that happening again....

There are no plans in the immediate future and deffinately not by the end of the year to upgrade to php 5. We will not upgrade one or two servers and we do not move customers from server to server on request. Hate to see you go but TotalChoice is probably not the right host for you at this time.

Good luck with wherever you host.

Some of the issues when you host your account in a shared server environment are lack of custom complies or custom software. While I am not saying your request is custom, it does fit into that area.

PHP4 is more commonly used at the moment, 5 is stable but you will find more bugs and also security issues with it since it's still newer than php4.

Would we love to be able to move users to customized servers? Yep, we would. Can we and maintain our low pricing structure. No.

When your in a shared hosting plan certain things you just can not control. Demanding something be installed or you give TCH the notice of leaving, well that simply wont change the mind of our adminstrators. Whom, by the way spend thousand of hours a year making sure our servers are secure and running at the most optimum levels possible. They have many things to deal with. In fact, they have tens of thousands of customers to please. Imagine them upgrading to php5 to please one customer and then in process having many other customers wanting to go back to php4.

We run a standard set of installed applications per server for a very good reason.

I would suggest looking for a Dedicated Server or a smaller hosting company that is willing to make changes on the fly to their boxes.

Yes there are bugs, but mainly in the new areas. And they are being fixed. PHP 5 is more than 6 months old now in its stable release. Some bugs surely remains, but I would not call php5 a security hazard.

Well, as I said, I would like to stay, but PHP5 is my developement platform nowadays. I do use simplexml, the new DOM functions, exceptions, mysqli, etc.

I am developing a system that I hope to sell to 25 customers this spring. And since I've been very pleased with TCH I had hoped I could stay. It's as simple as that.

It might have sounded a bit harsch, but judging from the replies in this thread and others I had to do something to get a definitive reply. As I said, if I could not get a date when PHP5 would be available I am forced to leave. Everything up til now has been really vague.

Well, I probably will. But at least I think you would appreciate to know why a so far satisfied customer decides to leave.

Lars,

IMHO, I think you should reconsider. I am in a similar situation and I think that you would do well to keep an account open at TCH.

In addition to points already made, here are a few more:

1- In about 15 minutes of easy effort, you can set up a simple web server on your own computer and develop your code in bleeing edge php nightly builds, if you choose. I took a suggestion from an old post right here in the TCH forums and used Abyss web server. Free software from Appellium. Download Windows installer for php 5.0+... you're running php on your own computer. Perfect for development purposes. And saves bandwidth.

2- You sound like you're in business, not a hobbyist. I'd suggest that the worst number in business is one of anything. One client, one server, one employee, one way of finding new business... etc. This includes one hosting company. This has nothing to do with TCH... you are running a risk putting all your eggs in any one basket... regardless of the quality of the basket.

So, even if you find a host that is 'better' than TCH in your opinion... you know that TCH is here to stay, helpful, client focused, and lots of other wonderful things. I would propose that paying twice the hosting fees is just a cost of doing business.
