This just started happening recently... don't know if it's because of an update or an SP2 issue or what....

When someone emails me a jpeg and I try to open it (I have my computer set to open these files in ACDSee), sometimes I get an error : " ! Cannot Open : / dde " I even save the file and then try to open it from the folder in which I saved it but the same thing happens.

I have not been able to figure out why I sometimes get the error and sometimes I don't. I'm pretty sure that I always get it if the email containing the jpeg is a forward. But sometimes it's not clear if it's a forward or an original email to me, but I can't open the jpeg.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? Maybe a simple setting I can change somewhere???

Unfortunately I dont know the answer to this since I dont use OE, but have you tried to use thunderbird as email program instead?

Also, moving for better exposure and organization.

I second Thomas suggestion of trying Thunderbird. It's much better, faster, lighter, not vulnerable to all those pesky IE viruses and exploits and it has a ton of great features that OE doesn't have

Thanks Ellen... that fix is way beyond my abilities and comfort level!

The problem only occurs with jpegs that are emailed to me, but not all the time.

I found a work around... if I save the file, I can preview it with the windows picture viewer. Then I can right click on it and open it with the microsoft photo editor (but not with ACDSee). If I make a slight change (like to it's size) and save it again with another name, I can access it. Sort of.

What is / dde anyway?????

From what I read in that article, it (could be) a corrupt identity. I don't use OE, but could you create a new identity, set up an email account in it and have someone send you a jpg to that new account and see if that jpg works correctly? If it works, then at least you will know it's your old identity.

I noticed the problem when I received a jpg or jpeg image that was saved in LOSSLESS format.

uploaded image is a lossless jpg for example - can't see it!

Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) is a Windows feature that allows users to create links between one application and another. With these links, data inputted into one application is automatically "transferred" to the other.

This tells me its a problem with ACDSee and not OE since you told OE to use ACDSee as your viewer for pictures. The DDE error is telling you you a have a problem passing data from one program to the other but not which side is having the problem.

Change the viewer in OE from ACDSee to another and see if the error continues, if it doesn't this will point more to ACDSee as the problem. It can't read that file for whatever reason.

yeah... I think it's an ACDSee problem too. Weird though because it only seems to happen with jpegs that are attached to forwarded emails and not with jpegs that are attached to original emails. At least as far as I can tell. And it only started happening recently... perhaps due to some Windows update?

The other weird thing is that even though I can't open the saved files with ACDSee, if I open the ACDSee program itself and browse to that folder, the files are there and I can use ACDSee to view them, resize them, print them or anything else. In other words, ACDSee won't open when I click on a file in a folder (or in a forwarded email), but if it's already open, I can access that same file with it. Strange, huh?

I did change my default viewer for jpegs to Windows picture viewer.... it's not nearly as convenient... I suppose I'll get used to it. Question: I changed my default viewer in Windows (Control Panel > Folder Options> File Types), is there a way to just change the viewer in OE like Madman suggested? I haven't been able to find it, but I'd sure like to leave ACDSee as my default viewer in everything except OE.

I second Irfanview. Used it for years and love it!

Ok, using 5.0 myself. Which doesnt matter since I didnt have that problem with 4.x either I just remembered.

By the way, speaking of something else, do you mind if I pm you a question?

hi all, just to say we've had the same problem with acdsee but not with emailed jpegs. we had photos given to us on a dvd, windows fax viewer was the only prog out of acdsee, irfanview and nero photo viewer that would open them. but, and here's the weird part, when we tried to open them with acdsee on another pc, it opened them fine. we had the same version (9) of acdsee on both pcs.

here's the even weirder part tho... on the pc that wouldn't open them with anything but windows fax viewer, we opened one photo with windows fax viewer and saved it to the c drive using windows fax viewer. it then opened fine with acdsee. however, when we tried to copy the whole folder from the dvd to the desktop, the photos wouldn't open. we've admitted defeat so far and are now taking each individual photo, opening it in windows fax viewer, saving it, then opening with acdsee. (the other pc doesn't have a cd burner and we need the photos on cds).

if anyone gets to the bottom of this, kindly let us know!

thanks
