boxturt Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 Greetings. I apologize in advance for the following questions but I'm just not understanding very well. 1) When I set up a subdomain, say guitar.boxturt.com - is my corresponding email addy supposed to be guitar@boxturt.com or somebody@guitar.boxturt.com ? I'm begining to think the latter. 2) I did see instructions for setting default email address as well but I'm afraid I don't quite grasp that either. I imagine once I understand question #1 I'll get this one. Thanks in advance. .....just a wee bit embarassed, Boxturt Quote
dognamedmoses Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 Boxturt, I think your right concering the "latter" but I'm not completely sure i understand your question (what is 'addy') anyway, when you set up a subdomain, go back into the email manager, and you will see that you can set-up email accounts for the subdomain as well... each acct you set up will go to somebody@subdomain.domain.com as you were thinking. You can also set up the default acct redirect, just go into "default address" your question is a great one, just remember that subdomains aren't really anything more than a great form of topical organization. They're intimidating, but they don't have to be. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 Subdomains are worth there weight in gold. Follow the above advice, and best of all, just play around and see what happens. Jim Quote
boxturt Posted March 26, 2003 Author Posted March 26, 2003 Ok, thanks. I have the address ('addy') part figured for me@mysub.**** but I'm very confused about this Default Address thing. "Redirect Unrouted Mail'? Wouldn't unrouted email just bounce? Or is that exactly what :fail: and :blackhole: are for? I Do like the idea of junk stuff spiraling away into a powerful vortex though. Slower Than The Average Turt, Ty Quote
TCH-JimE Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 Basically say I have an email address: me@mydotadress.com What the unrouted email option does is that if someone sent an email to an email address like Docterwho@mydotaddress.com but this address does not exist, it will "reroute" the email to an specified address that does exist. In this case, i suggest you set up an address called: spam@mydotaddress.com and redirect all email that is not reconised there. Then its just a simple case of checking it every so often and pressing delete. Jim Quote
boxturt Posted March 26, 2003 Author Posted March 26, 2003 I have done exactly that. I thank you both for your time and suggestions. ty Quote
gabeanderson Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 Something cool I just discovered about the :fail: command for unrouted mail: You can set the text after the command to anything you want. After 5 years of using the same email address and finally getting fed up with spam, I've switched to a new address in my domain and have just set up the following in the default address area of the cpanel in case any legitimate people (not spammers) email my old address: >:fail: spambots be gone - people visit http://gabeanderson.com/contact to write to gabe ...and here's the top of the resulting bounced message: >Subject: Mail delivery failed: returning message to sender This message was created automatically by mail delivery software (Exim). A message that you sent could not be delivered to one or more of its recipients. This is a permanent error. The following address(es) failed: spam@gabeanderson.com forced failure: spambots be gone - people visit http://gabeanderson.com/contact to write to gabe I think it's pretty cool. -gabe Quote
Lianna Posted March 26, 2003 Posted March 26, 2003 Ah, Gabe! That is indeed VERY cool! Thanks for sharing. Lianna Quote
