svl2706 Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Hi Guys, I've got a newbie question, sorry about that... I'm using sqmail to read my emails when I'm at my customer's side (so logged through his network). I'd like to be sure that my login/password are safely transfered on the network and that nobody in the company can read of log the email I receive and I send with the Sqmail interface. I realized that when I'm connecting through the address: https://www.****/sqmail I arrive normaly to my webmail connexion page. Does anybody know if it's enough to garanty me that my email information (loggin and content) are safely encrypted on the network? The server doesn't require any other logon than my email login and password, is the connexion still secured? If not, how can I be sure my email doesn't travel unencrypted on the network? Thanks for any help you can provide me. Regards, S. Quote
oompahloompah Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Your login/password is transferred securely when you use https. However if you would like to secure the transit of your emails, use something like PGP. Check out http://www.pgp.com Hope this helps. :-) Figured I might as well help out while am waiting for responses to my queries. I'm new here too by the way. Quote
jandafields Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 Remember that when using computers other than your own, you never know what kind of software may be installed. Keyloggers, screen grabbers. These could be intentional by the owner, or viruses unknown to the owner. (You should know how to keep this sort of stuff off of your own computer.) Any, many companies use this software intentionally to monitor their employees... Quote
TCH-Don Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 many companies use this software intentionally to monitor their employees... This is very common, but not generally revealed to the employess. Quote
svl2706 Posted September 29, 2004 Author Posted September 29, 2004 Hi guys, I know for sure (Im' working in the it department of the company) that nothing is installed locally on the desktop I'm using in the office. More over, I also sometimes use my own laptop but through the company's network. So my questions is more focused on what goes on this networks. So, when using the webmail interface but through the httpS interface (not the http), is the content of any page visible or encrypted? thanks S. Quote
jandafields Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 It's my understanding that everything (username, password, emails) will be encrypted bith ways as long as the LOCK is showing at the bottom of the Internet browser. Quote
MikeJ Posted September 29, 2004 Posted September 29, 2004 As jandafields said, if you are using HTTPS, the lock is showing on your browser, and you didn't get any warning about insecure items in the page, then everything being transferred between your computer and the webserver over that connection is encrypted. svl2706 Posted September 30, 2004 Author Posted September 30, 2004 Hi Mike, and guys, thanks for your message it seems to confirm what I though. By the way, server40 is giving me a slight security issue since its certificate has expired (since 2004/09/27). Is-it planned to be validated? cheers S. Quote
