rnmcd Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 anyone else not get emails even though you have subscribed to a thread? Any idea why that is happening to me? hmm Quote
TCH-Don Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 This has been a mystery to me, as I get all the e-mails even when still logged in and browsing the forums. This is how my controls for the forum are set: Option > email settings > Board Preferences checked - Send a confirmation email when I receive a new private message Enabling this option will send an email confirmation of any new private messages sent to you. checked - Enable 'Email Notification' by default? Enabling this option will automatically subscribe you to any topic you start or reply to. To subscribe to a forum, I goto the bottom of the page and select Subscribe to this forum Then in my controls > Subscriptions > view forums I see the various forums that I subscribe to. I do have SpamAssassin on and set *@totalchoicehosting.com in the white list. I don't know if that helps, but that what I have and it works for me. Quote
rnmcd Posted September 12, 2004 Author Posted September 12, 2004 thanks Don but for some reason I'm not getting the notifications...matter of fact, I didn't get a notification that you had replied. I don't want to get notified of every thread that I have started or replied to, just certain ones. Quote
TCH-Don Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 It may depend on what e-mail you use for the forum, just a guess, but if you use hotmail or other free email maybe they are going into a junk or spam folder and need to be added to an authorized list? As I say just a guess. Quote
rnmcd Posted September 12, 2004 Author Posted September 12, 2004 I gave that consideration too but I do receive some notifications but not all of them...even from the same thread I get some notifications of replies but not for others. Thanks. Quote
Virtual Imager Posted September 12, 2004 Posted September 12, 2004 You must actually visit the board after you get the notification in rder to get notified again the next time. Just reading the reply in the email is not enough since only one notification is sent per board visit. I don't know if this is your problem, but it took me a while to realize this when I wasn't getting notified of all replies. So always click on the link in the email... Quote
rnmcd Posted September 12, 2004 Author Posted September 12, 2004 I actually knew that. I always go to the thread if I do receive a notification. Quote
rnmcd Posted October 6, 2004 Author Posted October 6, 2004 It's still happening even though I am subscribed to the thread. hmmmmmmmm Quote
jandafields Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 This has been a constant battle for me. The problem stays a few weeks, and then everything work a few weeks... I workaround this by using the search feature and search for my own name and leave the keyword blank. Then I can easily see all the threads I have participated in during the last 30 days. By the way, I am using my domain email hosted here with TCH, so it should not be a email delivery problem. Quote
rnmcd Posted October 7, 2004 Author Posted October 7, 2004 I didn't even get notified to your reply to this thread about not getting notified Quote
jandafields Posted October 7, 2004 Posted October 7, 2004 I've got a notifying feeling that you probably wern't notified by the notifier or the notifier notification system about this notification about notifications and notifier notifications either... Quote
danceswithscissors Posted October 8, 2004 Posted October 8, 2004 I rarely get notifications and the few that do come in don't have any part of the message in them, just an url to come in here. I use Outlook Express and everything comes through, I use no filters, I have no strange firewalls. I figured Rob was intercepting my notifications and eating them. woooot Quote
rnmcd Posted October 27, 2004 Author Posted October 27, 2004 is the problem with Invision Power Board....or something else? Quote
TCH-Don Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 (edited) I am not so sure about that. I was taking a long time to reply to a post that I had answered before, and got an e-mail while composing that some else had replyed. I wonder if changing the e-mail being used may help. I changed mine to one at my own domain to see if it made any difference and for more than a month now, I still get all the notices. Its still a mystery <_< Edited October 27, 2004 by TCH-Don Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 I read a possible solution (non-tested/verified) from Head guru a few days ago, but I can not find it right now. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 Found it, scroll down to Head Gurus second post in this thread. Quote
jandafields Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 Found it, scroll down to Head Gurus second post in this thread. But, the forum will not allow you to setup two account with identical email addresses... Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted October 27, 2004 Posted October 27, 2004 (edited) I know. But what i think the people that HG spoke to was that when trying this we should drop the original/first account. I personally dont see how that would change anything since if we drop account one we are back to square one. Edited October 27, 2004 by TCH-Thomas Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 You can´t as far as I see. The only way would be to ask the staff to delete the current one before you registered for a new one. I dont think they will let us ask them this though, because then all would want to delete their accounts, and being the one that would do the deleting...well, I think you understand what I mean. jandafields Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 Nobody would want to lose their ranking (number of posts) either. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 (edited) I contacted Invision about this issue today Section31, here is what they would like us to try. Set up another user using the same email address and then once again subscribe to the forum of your choice. At that point they would like to see if you then get email alerts. If you have time give it a shot and let me know. Bill was asking that Section31 try this as a test and not something everyone should be doing. Edited October 28, 2004 by TCH-Bruce Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 Ok. I read it as this IPB-guy was pretty sure it was gonna solve it. Sorry. Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 Well if it solved the problem then yes, if people that can't get the emails could do this. But if you read further down in the thread it didn't seem to make a difference. I only subscribe to the server forums that I have web sites on and I get those emails. I guess I am lucky. Quote
TCH-Thomas Posted October 28, 2004 Posted October 28, 2004 But if you read further down in the thread it didn't seem to make a difference. I didnt. Mainly because I didnt get any notifications about new replies to it. And when I posted the "go see Bills post" I didnt think of reading the thread to the end. Quote
ThatAdamGuy Posted November 15, 2004 Posted November 15, 2004 InvisionBoard is notorious for having a flakey and poorly implemented e-mail notification system. I've tried respectfully prodding the team there and more vocally urging them to fix it, but despite my many protestations (and others' protestations), it remains broken even in 2.0. Here's the key issues: By default, if the system perceives you as active on the boards (e.g., visited ANY page on the forum in the last [x] minutes, where x is usually 15 or 20), then you will not receive an e-mail notification. For example: - Fred posts a note in an InvisionBoard forum. - He then browses other topics on that forum and during that time, someone posts a response to his query. - But he doesn't get a notification, because he's still 'active' on the board. The creators of IPB have argued with me that folks don't want to get innundated with e-mail notifications if they're active on the board. I replied that every other major forum system (vBulletin, phpBB, etc.) sends one reply on each topic replied to, regardless of the perceived status of the person's activity level, which is what people expect. So what did IPB do? They created a "compromise" whereby people using 2.0 can opt to receive an unlimited number of e-mail notifications when others reply to their topic. So if someone posts a reply in a topic and turns on notification in this context and 400 people reply while that guy is away at work, when he gets home, he'll have 400 e-mails in his inbox. This idiocy was the final straw for me (and exacerbated by IPB's reneging on an earlier promise to ALWAYS have unlimited-use free trial versions of their software). In advising a tech client recently, I convinced them to buy a vBulletin license, and they've been thrilled with the board. When I have a chance, I'll convert over my own site's board to either phpBB or vBulletin. I'd advise TCH to do the same with their board. IPB is a sinking ship. Quote
jandafields Posted November 16, 2004 Posted November 16, 2004 Thanks for the technical info. By the way, I've always been a phpBB fan, it's opensource (therefore customizable) and it is FREE Quote
rnmcd Posted January 22, 2005 Author Posted January 22, 2005 i'm still not getting notifications for some reason. And I'm sure the emails aren't in my junk/bulk email box. hmmmmmmm Quote

That is strange, I am very acitive on this board, and get e-mails while I am here, some just minutes after I post in a thread. Its still a mystery. Adam you might look into Simple Machine Forum http://www.simplemachines.org/ by the creators of Yabba board, but in php, and they have a very active forum. Quote
