dlevens
Another Poll, I wish we could do several polls in one post. I chose IMAP because I like the flexibility of checking from many sources and still maintaing folder structure. I wish delete function worked the same as POP though. dlevens
wow, am I the only one who uses IMAP? Dennis
TCH-Don
Well at least we know who to ask how to use it
Deverill
I never used IMAP because I run everything through webmail enabled sites which I can check from anywhere and then download it to my home PC for permanent storage. I just forward everything to the same ending point so the multiple account issue's no bonus for me either so I'm a POPper. Maybe if I'd "grown up" using IMAP I may see it otherwise. dlevens
Jim, I also only use one ending account email so I am still not sure how the multiple account works in IMAP. But the reason I use IMAP is I like to see my email sorted. Having one large inbox with email from family, mixed with bills, and mixed with misc is a mess to me. Since I used to use hotmail I was used to having filters move mail from bills@**** to the bills folder etc. Hotmail is not really pop or IMAP but more closely resembles IMAP over anything else. TCH-Bruce
You can create folders and rules for processing incoming email to be moved to those folders in any POP email client.
borfast
You can create folders and rules for processing incoming email to be moved to those folders in any POP email client.Yep, that's exactly what I do to sort e-mail from all the accounts I use Edited June 21, 2004 by TCH-Raul

That's exactly what I do.. I use several email accounts too and Outlook Express makes it easy to have the mail go into different folders for my different needs
webmedic
Well currently I get about 1000 - 2000 email a day with roughly half of them being spam on any given day. I also build email servers for the city and a few other buiness's here in my local town. I currently have mine setup with spam and virus filtering. This then is filtered using maildrop into maildir type mail folders. I perfer maildir for the extra security and also the ease of using quotas. At any rate I use both imap and maildir. With Imap I can check the server and see what spam and virii have been collected. When I know that no spam is in my main inbox then I download through pop so the email can be searched easily and used for reference later. I currently have about 500,000 emails or so and they take up about 5 gig's of space. These I can access and search easily through kmail my email program. dlevens
You can create folders and rules for processing incoming email to be moved to those folders in any POP email client. Yes you can, but there are limitations. If you sort from webmail, when you go to download via pop it only downloads the inbox, any mail sorted before hand is stuck in those folders on the server. If you sort after you download to your local client then you cannot see those email anywhere but on the local client. With IMAP I can sort on any client and still download the email on any client. This way I can have "LIVE" email sorting for emails I want to leave on the server and be able to access anywhere. I tend to have a lot of emails that require attention for a few weeks and do not like to only access them from home, and don't like them kept unsorted in the inbox while left on the server. IMAP seems to solve all these issues, keeping me organized and giving me the most flexibility. Now, if only I could sort the mail at the server level before I even open an email client. Working on that next. Dennis
CamelOnTheRun
IMAP is cool cuz your email is everywhere you are. really great for us college kids. hence the whole usage of tch. you people rock. i only wish it could check POP accounts i could hook it into. i have one question though. can all the webmail systems (neo, horde, squirrel) check an IMAP email? Working on that next. Gmail is basic but I'm sure it will add features as they go. If they get everything working like it should and address people's concerns about security, etc, then they may have a real contender.
