When a little box dances around an empty montior screen saying

sync out of range

Is this a bad monitor or video port?

thanks in advance for any suggestions

Ahh. Hate that. Without reading that article, in my experience, that means that the computer is trying to send a video feed that the monitor cannot handle. Likely culprit: your resolution is too high for the monitor to display.

This 'puter is owned by an older guy and I am not sure what he's been doing . Have to go take a look.

I see most of these problems are from video cards for games and I doubt that he is doing any games so I thought I would ask all the "family" gurus and see what you guys and gals thought.

Maybe it's his onboard video gone bad? Different monitor didn't solve his problem and I don't know why he's change his res, but will check.

thanks.

Does the POST screen show when the computer is booting up? If it does get into the bios and set everything to default. If it doesnt show up you can clear the CMOS by either turning the computer off, unplugging it and removing the cmos battery for a few minutes, or find out what motherboard it has, look up the manual for it and see if it has a CMOS jumper. Then you would turn off the pc, unplug it, switch the jumper for a few seconds, switch it back then power it back up.

Normally thats a dead video card problem, but clearing the cmos might fix it. If it doesnt and you have a spare video card try using it and see what happens.
