Easiest way to make a backup of the forum files would be to go to the backup section cpanel and make a "home" backup. That would include *every single file in your account. * = Atleast those needed for everyday work. There are a few files that will not be in this backup but they are not necessary unless moving to new server etc.

If all files regarding your forum is gone, you would need to restore both the forum files (php files) and its database. Both are downloaded/backed up through cpanels backup section. If you have not gone through this backup section I would think you do not have a back up. If you open a ticket, we'll check our backups for you.

Sounds like it´s time to submit a ticket and ask the help desk if they have a backup from which they can restore it for you, unless you have a backup yourself. If so, upload it to your server and tell the techs where you put it and its name and they can restore it. If you don´t have a backup, I would suggest doing one right away through the cpanel after the trip to the helpdesk in case of an emergency in the future and also put it as a routine in making a backup every week or so, plus check the Backup info thread.

Where here would I find information on having a subdomain? I have another address that I will want to point to the openeyed site where I would have pages - or should it be a subdomain? You may host several domains in one account but they must point to the same content. To have 2 (or more) domains pointing to different content you will need a reseller account or individual accounts. If you want you could set up the "openeyed site" as a subdomain if you are ok with that it uses your primary domainname. The address to the "openeyed site" would then be openeyedsite.your-domain.com. Also, where would I find info on incorporating a blog, either WordPress, if I try again there or blogger? You could set it up in its own subfolder/subdomain. There is a one-click install through the fantastico section in your cpanel. And, finally, if I get frustrated again with getting or understanding help, what resources are there - are there any that are for low level sites, those without databases and all the acronyms that are quite meaningless to a non-geek but still would be small scale web designer? I have some web design books but not infrequently need more (or maybe less) than is in the books.... There are lots of tutorials and other info on the Help site and of course this forum.

Bruce, perhaps it´s time to look for another theme, you have had a lot of problem with that theme after upgrades.

While I have just played very quickly with Drupal, my vote goes to Joomla, especially when their new version 1.5 comes out. But it is all a matter of taste, so I would install both through Fantastico and play around with them both and see which one I like best.

On my own site there were 2 plugins that doesn´t work, archives and links. It will be interesting to see how that plugin update notification works.
