Our resident guru's will chime in shortly, but I would recommend Knoppix. You can run it directly from a CD and don't even have to wipe out your Windoze install. I've also heard that Mandrake and Debian are good choices. A web site I usually go to, you might look at www.linuxiso.org. Hope this helps!
