  1. Since installing Webroot's Spy Sweeper my computer is operating differently. I posted last night under hardware problems. This morning I was reading their help section and decided to click on tech help in order to find out why my f-secure is not cooperating with Spy Sweeper and why the computer is crashing when the other user attempts to log off. As soon as I clicked on the tech help I got the big alert that IEXPLORE.EXE was trying to access the computer and did I want to allow it. I must have clicked on no a dozen times - it kept popping back up. I checked the file on Firefox. Wow! I'm not the first person who's got this. Obviously there is a great deal of controversy as to what exactly this file is. Spy Sweeper is confirming constantly that I have no spyware. The tech who checked my computer a few days ago said it is clean. I ran a search to see where on my computer IEXPLORE.EXE shows up. This is what I got - http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Nan...STHISAVIRUS.jpg What should I be doing here? I feel like I'm in over my head. Edit: TCH-Bruce - converted image to link. Please don't embed links to large images, thanks
  2. I can't get these files to stop loading on start up. I have a new Canon scaner that I've installed. I don't need any of these files. I have had this mess on my start up for MONTHS! I've deleted all the sj652 files except two that wont allow me to delete. The two files are: hpupdate.exe and newdev.dll http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v239/Nan...utthesedown.jpg Edit: TCH-Bruce - converted image to link. Please don't embed links to large images, thanks
  3. I have a new problem with my computer. I just got it back from a tech. The fan was making a grinding sound ... that started heating up the tower case. Tech said nothing wrong with fan. Maybe it was dust ... or something. He ran a few (???) tests on the computer - one of which was a test for viruses. Said it was running slow. Blamed it on spyware and my Shaw Secure. That's my cable company's answer to virus checker and firewall and spyware checker. F-Secure. He said he found evidence of spyware. I was dumbfounded! I update and upgrade constantly Anyhow - he doesn't like Shaw Secure. He suggests it does not do as good a job of blocking spyware as other programs. He sold me Webroot Spy Sweeper. (note: today I spoke with him and he tells me ya the spyware could have been stuff my Shaw had already found. Hmm?) I installed Webroot. I have no spyware. Now my computer seems slower. Could be my imagination. My husband (who is also a user) has discovered that as soon as he logs off - it tries saving his settings - goes black and the computer is frozen. I hold down the off switch until it re-boots. This is a drag. It is not doing it on my side. I have no viruses. I have 512 installed memory. Lots of free space. Windows XP. Webroot has one critical shield that is not working. The tech says it doesn't matter. It's the one called Spy Communication. I've run SW on both my side and the user side. Spoke to Shaw today. Guy didn't even know what Webroot was. He made a suggestion as to what file to add to the ignore file. Didn't make any difference. I'm curious as to what you learned about the conflict with the two programs. I figure its gotta be a conflict with Shaw and Webroots Spy Sweeper. Don't know what to do.
  4. thanks Don! Sounds like I'm doing everything right so far. I just want to make sure all my "stuff" stays where it belongs - just in case I do something incredibly stupid and wreck everything in one fatal move! Regards, MM
  5. Hello Bruce! I am just a teensy bit confused on the c/panel back up stuff. I just went in to my c/panel (Yesssssss!!! It worked this time!!! ) and did one of those home back up choices on the left column. I do this each month. What about that little box with "weekly" in it? Does that mean c/panel is automatically backing me up every week and sending a copy to my Doc file where I've got my backups? If that's the case - I don't need to do backups - right? I've noticed the BIG GUN BACKUP selector at the top, in the centre of the page. It appears rather important looking - and perhaps something I shouldn't mess with - but I'm not sure. Should I be doing something there too - or is this something you do at your end? I'm a little fuzzy on the database/filter/alias thing too - but it appears from your last entry that your office has those pretty much under control and I needn't concern self. I might have known all this a year ago Bruce - but I'm drawing a big blank today. I don't need a lot of detail here. Could you just give me some yes, no, yes, no - two or three word answers and I'll go away again.
  6. Well, aren't you nice to say that! It's really just my blog. That's all I've ever been able to figure out how to do. One of these days I really am going to figure out how to make actual web pages so that one doesn't have to scroll through eleventy million pictures of my ADORABLE grandchildren. I like writing my little stories and they tend to get lost in my plethora of pictures. I bought one of those wonderful, expensive books on HTML etc., but I just feel faint when I start reading it. I need to hire someone to make me a kewl website that I can look at.
  7. Congratulations Tim - you've done it! You will all be able to rest easy now - knowing that I have backed up my blog. Heaven forbid I should lose all those baby pictures!
  8. Okay - so - I take that back. It's still busted!
  9. No Tim - you're wrong. It's me. Just the simple fact that I even think about going into cpanel crashes the system. Plese try to find it in your collective hearts to forgive me ... and thanks for your attention ... it's appreciated.
  10. I submitted a ticket. Tried to send the screenshot ... nada.
  11. Any need for me to submit a ticket too?
  12. It is not working for me either. I've followed all the directions above.
  13. Is this similar to what's happening with you? I'm just getting a blank screen and this is what I see in the address bar:
  14. Took Island Princess from LA to Santa Barbara to San Francisco to Sitka to Ketchikan to Victoria to Vancouver. Fabulous trip. Great ship! Highly recommend it. It was sort of an Alaska sampler. Repositioning type cruise I guess. Our third trip to Alaska.
  15. Hi Guys! I took a cruise. Let the computer sit idle and contemplate its navel for a couple of weeks whilst I hoovered down every morsel of food that passed under my nose. Can you say "Piggo?" Anyhow - the computer has been working very well for several days now. I still have no idea what sets it off like that ... but it appears to be in good health as we speak. It's a constant challenge isn't it? MM
  16. I have now followed their instructions re unloading and then re loading. Okay ... everything appears to be up to date. It says it is. I'll keep an eye on it, see what happens. Cheers,
  17. I got this note from Shaw. I'd sent them an image of almost 2,000 event entries. This is their comment: Thank you for your email. F-secure is your anti-virus program, and is responsible for monitoring your computer for intrusion attempts, as well as scanning your computer's files for potential hazards. As part of this activity, it generates many events throughout the course of checking files, polling servers for updates, etc. The traffic generated is normal activity for F-secure, and you should not be concerned with these items.
  18. Thank you so much for your time. Here is a dialogue I've just had with Shaw Secure. They are my cable company. You will notice the comment on Backweb. It is the program used to update Shaw Secure. ********************** Not sure how to do #8. The rest are done. A-ok. Negative on all others with the exception of Spybot. Yes, I did delete Spybot when advised it didn't work happily with Shaw. It took many letters to Spybot to find out how to get rid of ALL of their files. The final file that kept showing up in my scan had to be deleted manually. I don't recall what the file was called. How do I know if Spybot is the problem? I also ran a search for backweb.* and came up with this. Here is a shot of the top of the log file for your info. ----- Original Message ----- From: Shaw Internet Calgary Help To: Sent: Thursday, May 04, 2006 12:05 PM Subject: RE: Please check out my shaw secure builds Hello, Thank you for your email. There are some scenarios that can cause the update component of Shaw Secure to malfunction. You will need to check these in the following order: 1. Check the Date and Time settings are correct. 2. Make sure you have 'Admin' privileges (sometimes if you do not have enough privileges, the updates will not go through). 3. Make sure you are not behind a router, if so, please bypass it. Some routers, if not properly configured, may block the automatic updates. 4. If you have used Spybot recently, it may have removed Backweb (the program used to update Shaw Secure). If this is the case, you will need to reinstall Shaw Secure. 5. Check the following folders and make sure there are no files located in them: C:\Program Files\Shaw Secure\Anti-Virus\dbupdate.htp and C:\Program Files\Shaw Secure\Anti-Virus\dbupdate If there are any files, please delete them as they are most likely corrupt, then try to update again. 6. Check the Automatic Update Log to see what the last actions have been. It is located under 'Automatic Updates', --> 'Advanced'. In the 'Downloads' section there will be an option for 'Show Log File', the actions inside are listed from earliest to latest. This will usually let you see if there were any errors, or when the last action was taken. 7. Suspend and Resume the Automatic Updates, then try 'Check Now'. 8. Unload Shaw Secure and Allow All Network Traffic, then reload Shaw Secure and try to update again. If none of the above works, Uninstall and Reinstall Shaw Secure. ------------------------------ Thank you for choosing Shaw. Got an alert the other day saying my updates were behind. I have it automatically set ... so I was wondering why I'd get that alert.
  19. Image posted as attachment (TCH-Bruce) This is tonight's. Does this photo tell you what is happening. Gosh, I looked at that file and it's HUGE! All sorts of red x's and warnings. Does everyone's look like that? Am I supposed to delete these files. There is almost two thousand events! F-secure is my cable/firewall/virus checker.
  20. Thanks for the tip. Actually I use Picassa2. I like it. I'll look into that other program. Sounds like a gooder. I'm movin' fast here. My mouse just froze when I tried to send an email on Outlook Express. It's been working fine since I last commented. Out of the blue it dumped again. What a drag! S
  21. Ok ... here goes the test. I've been on the forum for several minutes now - reading past advice. So far I still have a mouse. I have done a disk clean up and defrag. I have moved the temp file slider to 800. I've compacted old files. Does that number "800" sound like a good one to leave the temp file setting at? I usually defrag about once a month. I use a program called "CleanUp!" to flush the caches stuff. My settings in Internet Options do not appear to work. Not sure why. I mean clearing cookies and temp files. It's like the program can't find them ... that's why I've used CleanUp! for years. I take a lot of photgraphs and keep many of them on the computer. I also use Picassa2 as well as MY PICTURES folder. I'm wondering if I have too many photos on the computer? I"ve actually made CD's of most of them ... but I start bringing them back onto the computer - changing folders they're in ... and ultimately making a mess of my filing system. I must have the same photos saved on several CD's. What I need is one big CD to save ALL my photos, instead of dozens of CD's. I have tray for playing DVD's but I know nothing about burning DVD's. I'm assuming (there I go again ) that I have to buy yet another piece of machinery to burn my own DVD's. Is that how y'all store your millions of photos? I seem to have tons of space when I look at this - See image attachment (TCH-Bruce) So ... I've now been on the forum for several minutes - done lots of "stuff" and lo and behold - NO MOUSE FREEZE UP! Let's assume I have solved the problem by doing the obvious. Thanks heaps for taking the time to answer my question and make suggestions. I'd say they worked!
  22. just happened again. Lost my last post. That's three times since I started writing this post. I'm going to log off the forum before I lose the mouse again. Do you think system restore would help? Do you think it has anything to do with the fact that I've been flipping back and forth with Firefox and I.E?
  23. Hi, It's an optical mouse. I was reading replies to my posts earlier today and once again ... not typing ... just reading ... and "ding" the darn thing froze again. I read an old post of mine on this forum where I was complaining that my mouse was freezing up on me. Well, after than I was able to fix the problem. I needed to slide the "amount of disk space to use" slider in temp internet files ... up to a larger number and my problem was solved. I've just moved it up to 1526 now. It was at 700 something. What number do you have yours set at? I have 512 on my computer so I should have lots of memory. I"m wondering why this is starting up again. I did download JAlbums today.
  24. Okay. Now I know I'm going to really embarrass myself by asking this next question - but - I'm prepared for the humiliation. Actually, I'm sort of getting used to it. This word "backup" that you all seem so comfy with. Let's pretend you are talking to your Mom (I'm assuming here that you like your Mom) and you want her to back up her registry. What are you going to say to her? First of all Mom - the registry is located here__________. Then you put a CD in the E: drive and you copy these files____________. Then, when/if you find you have destroyed your computer, you go to the ________ folder and copy the back up file by putting the cursor here__________________. Get the picture? MM
  25. Hi y'all: It happened when I was on this forum replying to a post by Thomas. Ding! Ding! The mouse froze. I eventually had to re-start the computer ... and re-type my post. Same thing happened yesterday. I believe I was on a forum again ... in the middle of posting a reply. Do you have any idea what is causing this? I recognize the bell that goes off in the background ... when I'm not even touching the keys. I just can't associate it with anything. Somehow I don't think it's a problem with the mouse. MM
