How do I know if I need a dedicated IP? And what does that mean? Will a person be able to find me later if I don't have one? My site will be a small auction site, if that is any help in determining.

Also, does TCH offer streaming audio and video (I don't need them now, but just in case).

Thank you.

From: verbat.com:

Do I need Dedicated IP Hosting?

If you are hosted by a Linux (Unix) system with a web server capable of virtual hosting using headers, there is no reason at all for needing a dedicated IP. The IP address of the machine is enough to allow you access to your site using FTP or Telnet, and browsing your site with HTTP/1.1 compliant browsers is not a problem. There are no measurable speed or access restrictions experienced when hosting with headers rather than IP’s.

Some service providers will force you into hosting with a more expensive IP option rather than host headers claiming that speed and access will be greatly diminished. This is simply not true.

Hope that helps a little. Basically, virtual hosting (shared IP) is very well accessible and yes, your visitors will be able to find you via your domain name.

Thank you 1stover, that was very helpful. There just seems to be so much to consider when putting up a site. I never realized.

You know this  is how I feel.

Rules to live by when dealing with the Internet (in no particular order):

1. No question is considered "stupid"

2. We all were "newbies" at one time

3. Learn to use Google!

4. if something doesn't work, don't break it ... it's probably solar flares!

5. If you think the internet is slow, just think what it was like when we were using 1200 baud modems!

6. Learn to use Google!

7. what you see is NOT what you always get ... unless you are using a Mac!

8. Spam and popup windows is God's way of reminding us that we are not all powerful!

9. Really, really, really learn to use Google

10. Take time off to take your family or friends out for a hot fudge sundae. A hot fudge sundae beats working on a computer any day of the week!

Oh, did I mention that you should learn to use Google?

1200? I remember saving up and being thrilled when I bought my first 1200 baud modem to replace the 300 baud I had used for over a year. :)

Thank you KW. I discovered Google a few years back and don't know how I ever got along without it! I am doing some transcription work for live news broadcasts and if I didn't have Google I'd never be able to figure out how to spell all of these stange names in the news these days. Most of the time I have to look them up by their title because the name is so odd to me that I don't even know what letter it begins with!

As far as web stuff, I have used Google for looking up this site (through findmyhosting.com) and looking up various graphic, html and web development resources. I love that search engine. Wish I was the one who thought of it.

Thanks again!

:) I just wanted to use that Smiley.

Rick, yea I used to have a 300 baud acoustic coupler.

I limited my remarks to 1200 baud because that 's when I tried to first access the old Compuserve support network! Boy, and when Hayes came out with there 2400 baud smart modem ... I even had PC's linked together with that!
