jlb Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 Where can I go (on the TCH forum) to inquire about setting up phpBB on my webspace? Quote
LisaJill Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 Moved to the installing scripts forum. =) To install phpbb is very easy; just go to cpanel, click on "bulletin board" and then follow the instructions. Then login and configure it and you're good to go. Let me know if you need more assistance with this. =) Quote
jlb Posted April 15, 2004 Author Posted April 15, 2004 Lisa, thanks for your direction. I actually have already done the installation dealio. BUT, I don't know how to go from there. Before I realized that TCH offered phpBB, I actually downloaded version 2.08 from the phpBB site, but I had a problem setting up on my TCH databse. That's irrelevant now, but I just wanted to tell you. Anyway, can you tell me the first step in "administrating" my newly installed phpBB? What I mean is, how do I "configure it"? Quote
LisaJill Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 (edited) You should logon using the admin login and password (if you installed it manually, then that is in the instructions) and click on "administration panel" toward the bottom of the forum listings. Go through those screens and set up the options that you want. The very first of these should be changing the admin password from default. Two great sites for phpbb are http://www.phpbbhacks.com and of course, http://www.phpbb.com. Those have all sorts of mods and addons. My personal favorite of these is EasyMOD which allows you to auto-install easymod friendly mods; there are quite a few out there. =) Does that help to get you started? jlb Posted April 15, 2004 Author Posted April 15, 2004 Lisa, Thank you so much! That was wonderful advice. I logged in, went to the admin panel and am rockin. I appreciate it. Quote
LisaJill Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 Happy that helped! Feel free to post if you have more questions. =) Quote
Talwynor Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 If I could ask a follow-up? I see that its also possible to install an invision board as well as the phpboard listed in cpanel. What are the differences between the two (other than it appears that php is much easier to install for a newbie (like myself)). Quote
TCH-Bruce Posted April 15, 2004 Posted April 15, 2004 Both boards are very good. I find changing skins and other appearance things simpler to do in phpBB. Invision has more control features. Depends on what you want to do with the board and how strick you want to make it. Quote
whoahorse Posted April 23, 2004 Posted April 23, 2004 Does that help to get you started? Thanks! I searched the data base here, and your info helped me too! Weezy Quote

I visited phpbb.com and saw that other themes/templates are available. But when I came back to my cpanel, accessed my board's admin panel & clicked on the link to add a new Style, there was nothing to click. Is "subsilver" the only theme we can use? Mission Quote
LisaJill Posted May 22, 2004 Posted May 22, 2004 You need to upload the themes folder to your theme directory, so that the administration panel can detect it. The best way to do this is via ftp. Does that help? Quote
Mission Posted May 22, 2004 Posted May 22, 2004 Somewhat... I just FTP'd the files to my themes folder. But when I choose the theme ("Pixelated") from the control panel, all the fields are blank... ????? Thanks. Mission Quote
LisaJill Posted May 22, 2004 Posted May 22, 2004 Eh, changing themes shouldn't clear the fields... I'm not really sure on this. Have you double checked all permissions etc? Some of the themes don't touch the administration section only the public look, too.... Quote
Mission Posted May 24, 2004 Posted May 24, 2004 Hi, Lisa. In the Styles Administration web page, under "Management" "Edit Theme," in the control panel for my forum, if I choose the default "subsilver," the fields for such things as "backgound color," "text color," "link color," etc. are populated. If I choose the style I uploaded, "Pixelated," none of the fields have any data. And if I preview the forum, it still has the default "subsilver" style. I don't know what I need to do to change it. Thanks. Mission Quote
LisaJill Posted May 24, 2004 Posted May 24, 2004 Misson; this is a bit beyond my level of expertise. Have you tried another theme just to make sure it's not "Pixelated" that's the problem? I'll do some reading and try to help out further, but I don't have an answer right now. =/ Quote
