Does My Site Have Popups?

Can someone tell me if either one of my sites has pop ups?

My g/f told me the latter had some pop ups. I have no idea how that can be. Also, I have some really strange referrers to my site, which dont have my website on them at all. These I AM A SPAMMER type places

I had none for either.

 

Your gf might have some spyware on her puter. When I had that, I'd get popups on ANY site, and even some when my browser wasn't open. She might want to download and run AdAware and Spybot Search and Destroy. They did a good job cleaning up my registry.

Yeah thats what I said to her. But she told me there was none for gissur.com and only for the other one. Now what I´m trying to figure out is why in the world im getting refferer links from all sorts of weird sites that deal with nude celeb blogs, which I have never been to in my life? It´s very odd to me.

 

Its not only nude type sites.. also just some random pages I have never heard of and they dont even have a link to my site haha. For example this one http*//67.15.16.5/~wusqgroz/numero1/ Very very strange stuff.

It is called referring spamming. These people are lower lifeforms than email spammers, although I didn't think that was possible. I was getting well over 100 a day on my site; and have employed some fancy htaccess blocks (with some help from tch) to block them, as they eat bandwidth. =/

 

Basically what happens is that your site gets spidered, even the logs do; unless you use robots.txt to stop it, and some people ven show referring sites on their own websites; so referrer spammers use this to up their page ranks.

How can you detect this activity? Also, do you have a link that shows the method you used to combat it? Thanks

Check out AWStats, referring sites; if you see sites that seem random and don't have a link to you, then it may be referrer spam. Many of them may reference sex or drugs or gambling type things.

 

The method I'm using is outlined on weblog wannabe: blocking referrer spam.

Yes, its very useful. Anytime I remove those lines (I have probably 50 or so keywords blocked now) I am instantly inundated. My last 300 errors almost consistently says "client denied by server configuration...."

 

Amazing the lows that people will sink to.

I have actually removed those lines due to some problems over here. In one case it crashed one of my favorite visitors browser. I'm using a superscript that was posted when I queried about it in this thread. =)
