DarqFlare Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 (edited) Back at the end of last year, I won a surprise 2nd-place prize in the TCH "Caption Contest." Well, here's my review of my prize, the Dell DJ! Well, the Dell DJ is a portable media player produced by Dell (It is actually a remade Creative player, but Dell doesn't tell people that). It can play MP3, WAV, and WMA believe it or not. TCH gave me the 15GB model as a prize, but I stuck in a bit of my own money to cover getting the 20GB model, which also came with an inline remote and a protective belt clip cover for the player. Nice stuff. The DJ rocks. What can I say. I love it, especially with my inline remote. I just stick the player on lock and put it inside my jacket's inside pocket, get the remote hooked up to the pocket's opening (Think: belt clip), and control it from there. I've already got my entire music collection on it and have a playlist on it with all of the files. I just stick it on random and walk around the college campus listening to good music... If there's a song I want to hear, I just whip out the DJ, find it, and play it! If I don't like the current song, I just unlock the remote, hit the next button, and lock it back up again so I don't accidentally mess with things. Technically, I've had two DJs. The first one worked fine for awhile, but started to lag and lag. There would be aboue a 5-second delay between pressing next and the next song loading up. As it turns out, that DJ was all screwy anyway, and the hard drive on it died. I called Dell, got some decent, albeit "difficult to understand the accent" tech support, and they sent me off a replacement. It came in, and they even included the return shipping label so I didn't have to pay a thing. Awesome! So the new one is in and it's working much better than my last one. schussat Posted March 1, 2004 Posted March 1, 2004 Thanks for the review, Darqflare. One of the things that seems most daunting about a little player like this is the task of converting all my music. So, I wonder if you might comment on a couple more things: How do you convert, transfer and organize the music? Do you like the software on the PC side of things? And, just how many songs can you fit in 20GB? Thanks! -Alan Quote
DarqFlare Posted March 2, 2004 Author Posted March 2, 2004 Well, from my family's extensive CD collection, I use CDex to rip them down into an MP3 form. It is a nice open-source freeware program. For organization... I just have one master folder called MP3 under My Music. However, I do have two subfolders: One for my own music, and one for my friends'. My filenaming convention is the standard "Artist - Song Title." My ID3 tags do not contain any other information other than the Artist and Song Title, aside form my own and my friends' music. I use WinAmp 5 for all my music needs, but the DJ has to have Musicmatch to transfer them over... So whenever I rip a new song, I just transfer it over after it's done. As far as capacity, I have about 825 songs on the DJ and it's only.. 1/4 filled. Quote
