ejh Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 Hi Guys, Recently, I've been toying with the idea of buying a subscription to a satellite radio service, I've done lots of research and I'm pretty sure that if I decide I want satellite radio, I want to go with SIRIUS but XM does have it's pros as well. I was curious if anyone had had any experience with either company, what satellite radio is like... anything that might help me make up my mind. Thanks Guys!! Eric Quote
youneverknow Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 I like the idea of commercial free... so I vote for the Sirius system Quote
ejh Posted February 16, 2004 Author Posted February 16, 2004 XM has gone commercial-free recently on music Has anyone ever used either services? Quote
MikeJ Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 Since I've gotten my iPod hooked up in my truck, I've got thousands of songs to make my own radio with no subscription fee. Sorry... I know that doesn't help. Quote
ejh Posted February 16, 2004 Author Posted February 16, 2004 Actually... It does, I never thought of that. How much is the iPod? Is the cost of the iPod the only cost? Thanks. Quote
MikeJ Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 iPod: $250-$500 depending on storage capacity (I have the 40GB iPod). I also use the following for use in my Tahoe: Belkin TuneDok Car Holder - $30 (note: won't work for iPod mini) Belkin Auto Charger w/Audio - $40 Sony CPA-9C Car Cassette Adapter - $20 You can find some of the pieces cheaper by using a different or simpler type (like charger without audio and plug audio into iPod itself... just like the the ability to only have to plug in one cable when I hook up since audio is already plugged into charger cable, plus it's cleaner cabling.) It isn't cheap, and won't likely save you money over Sat Radio until you've used it for a couple years, but it has the advantage that you can take it anywhere, and make your own playlists. Quote
ejh Posted February 16, 2004 Author Posted February 16, 2004 Yikes, I also ran across that songs are $0.99 USD each, I think I'd rather pay $13 USD per month for 100+ stations... Thanks for your input though. Quote
Olbai Posted February 16, 2004 Posted February 16, 2004 I have been using XM for awhile now and love it, but I will be switching over to Sirius this summer. I am a big football fan and Sirius has signed a deal with the NFL to broadcast all the games next season. Quote
ejh Posted February 17, 2004 Author Posted February 17, 2004 How good is the sound quality? Is it worth the $13 USD per month? Is the NFL the only reason for making the change? If not, what else led you to switch? Thanks guys... Quote
DarqFlare Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 If I had satellite radio, I'd go for t he NFL carrier. Quote
stevevan Posted February 17, 2004 Posted February 17, 2004 Being a road-warrior, I have several coworkers who have XM. They love it. Sound quality is not notably degraded. From what I've read, Sirius has 100% commercial-free music. XM is about 95% commercial-free. According to what they are telling me, they have had no problems at all receiving the satellite signals no matter where they are at. One even liked his XM system so much, he bought the "portable" unit to set up and use on the job! It's nice because where I usually work, we are surrounded by communications racks and other types of metal. I'm leaning toward buying a satellite radio myself later this year. Hope my $.02 worth helps. Quote
ejh Posted February 17, 2004 Author Posted February 17, 2004 Thanks Steve... I think I'm leaning Sirius, right now they have a $50 rebate Thumbs Up when you buy two things that I want to buy! I only have a little more to save up and I'm off to Best Buy! Quote
stevevan Posted February 18, 2004 Posted February 18, 2004 Woo-hoo! Let me know how you like it. You might persuade me one way or the other! Quote
