For those of you who might be interested, the Mozilla project has just released the new version of their upcoming browser and e-mail client.

While Thunderbird retains it's name and gets it's version upgraded to 0.5, Firebird sees it's 0.8 release and changes it's name to Firefox.

If you've been following the latest Firebird builds, you won't see much difference.

Get them at the Mozilla project website

One thing to note if you're using a previsou Phoenix/Firebird version is that you should disable all the extensions before using Firefox. Read here: http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/releases/#install

Enjoy

PS - Linux builds with XFT and GTK2 enabled are available here:

Yep, I had to go for one of the mirrors, too.

Actually, I didn't have to but I did it because I imagined their servers would be crawiling in requests for the new versions

I'm running firefox now, and I'm very happy with it. After disabling extensions in firebird, and then loading firefox, the new browser picked up everything else in my profile perfectly. Firefox is zippier, and the file size is smaller (at least the linux binary), to boot!

A happy web surfer am I.

Speaking of mozilla projects, is anybody out there using Thunderbird? I've been running evolution for so long that I'm a little daunted with the prospect of moving. However, since I'm not using evo's calendar much anymore, I have less vested interest in the whole gigantic package.

Phew! I'm glad to hear that Firefox'll pick up my extensions! I was hesitating to update b/c of that. Once you get ur world the way you want it, life comes along and twists it! ;)

Off I go to download Fireffox :D I just switched over the Thunderbird last week and I haven't had any problems with it. And I have an extension in Firebird that'll let me open Thunderbird (or any other app) with a click of a button!

actually I'm reading the Release Notes and it won't pick up the extensions, I actually

have to find updates for each one that are compatible with Firefox. Hmmm.. I hadda feelin' it was too good to be true. But I might update anyway. I'll see how it runs cuz there's a known issue for Windows users:

Menus and folders on the bookmark toolbar do not always collapse correctly for Firefox users on Windows.

Thunderbird and Firefox - sounds like a buddy-movie or a rival fighter pilot movie. ;)

Alan,

I use Outlook at work and have a licensed copy that came with my computer but I've been using Thunderbird since I heard about it. It is full-featured and very well done. If you have any specific questions feel free to PM me or post and if I see it I'll be happy to give you anything I know.

I'm looking forward to getting the new versions when I get home tonite!

I guess I should have qualified that a bit: It did pick up a couple of my extensions, but wouldn't let me re-enable a couple of others -- so, it's a bit sticky in that area. Otherwise though, it's smooth sailing.

Thanks for the thunderbird suggestions, !!blue and Jim. If I ever finish with my grant proposals this week (aaaugh, it's like poking myself in the eyes with sticks -- sticks that, per the grant requirements, I don't even own!), I'll give thunderbird a try.

Aww man!! They don't have the AutoScroll extension for Firefox yet! (that's where you can scroll with the middle mouse button).

:)

all my other extensions are up tho ;)

Alan, my dad has been using thunderbird for a week and he's loving it. My sister has been using it for about 4 months and she likes it too.

I'm using evolution too and I've been thinking about switching to thunderbird but I like it's news aggregation thingy. Do you know about a nice news aggregator that I could use, so I can drop evolution?

Hi Raul-

I use bloglines, which is a free web-based aggregator service. I like being able to get my feeds from any location, so bloglines works great.

Bruce, I downloaded Abilon but it doesn't work. :(

I double-clicked the file but Nautilus asked me what I wanted to do with it, because it didn't recognize the format. What should I do? ;) ;)

Alan, bloglines looks nice but I was looking for something to use locally. I love web interfaces for some things but I hate them for other things as well - and reading headlines is one of the latter ;)

Anyway, I found a couple of interesting news aggregators that I decided to try:

http://www.nongnu.org/straw/

http://liferea.sourceforge.net/

By the way, for those who didn't understand, I don't use Windows. ;)

Abilon would probably work without any problem (and it looks a really nice application) if I was running windows on my computer but I use Linux, so that "Abilon not working" stuff above was just a joke. Since everyone on this planet supposes everyone else runs Windows and that this is the "normal" way of using a computer, I was acting like if for me, the "normal" way of using a computer would be with Linux. Thus the "Huh? But... this file won't run... I clicked it but it won't work! What's wrong? Everything else works on my system, why won't this work?".

OK, I'll shut up, now. Need to sleep

Yeah, I agree. But in my state of sleepiness last night, somehow I thought I should explain it... oh well, I guess I was *really* sleepy. Too bad, a good joke is a terrible thing to waste... <_< :o

By the way, Straw works like a charm! ^_^

No problem, Bruce. I just said that, because just before posting that message I was asking the same question to some people on IRC and they also suggested only windows programs and I thought I'd make a joke with that.

But thanks anyway <_<
