jsull Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 I'm considering setting up a site (or two) through TCH, but I'm curious about a couple things. I am for certain a total n00b when it comes to PHP, but I have installed CGI bulletin boards before. I've seen sites that use PHP Nuke, and the functionality with them just seems to be amazing. I thought I read it encorporates PHPBB which TCH supports. A big part of one of the sites will be community interaction, which I'm hoping a BB and/or some other functions will help. My question is, does TCH support PHPNuke? Also, If there are those of you that have used it, is it very difficult to set up? Looking at everything here makes it look like a no brainer to switch any sites I have to TCH, by the way. By far it blows away what I'm currently using. How difficult is it to switch hosts from one site to another? With one current host, all of my users use the webmail functions from CPanel. I'd hate to lose any of their info in a switch. Quote
Lianna Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 First, phpNuke can be installed directly through cPanel for your convenience. It's fairly easy to setup your site, but I strongly suggest reading the phpNuke documentation so that you understand all of the pieces-parts. Any questions that you then have can be asked here on the forums and family members can help you sort it out (the application itself is third-party and therefore not supported by TCH staff). How difficult is it to switch hosts? Well, it's rather simple actually and in your circumstance, it may be even easier... You write that your current host uses cPanel? If so, then after sign up, you should do two things: 1. Change the Name Servers for your domain at your registrar to the name servers given in your "Account Created" email (you'll receive this 12-24 hours after sign up). 2. Put in a helpdesk ticket requesting the existing site be transferred by our techs. They will take care of copying the existing site to your new account here. Note this is ONLY if your current host uses cPanel. Hope that helps. Quote
jsull Posted January 26, 2004 Author Posted January 26, 2004 Thank you VERY VERY Much for the info on PHP nuke. I will definitely check the info before I start installing. I registered the domain through the hosting company, so I'm assuming it's them I'd need to contact? Have you seen circumstances of old hosts acting childish? *Crosses fingers* Just hoping they won't try to become a roadblock. Quote
Lianna Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 I registered the domain through the hosting company, so I'm assuming it's them I'd need to contact? Have you seen circumstances of old hosts acting childish? *Crosses fingers* Just hoping they won't try to become a roadblock. Unfortunately, not only have I seen it, but quite a few times. You should do a WhoIs query on your domain to see what contact info is listed first....If you are indeed listed as the Admin Contact, then all should go pretty smoothly. Click here to do a WhoIs query. If you'd like to share your domain name with us, we can also look to see what kind of issues you may have and who you might contact. Quote
jsull Posted January 26, 2004 Author Posted January 26, 2004 It looks like I'm listed as the domain name contact the site is (EDIT: REMOVED BECAUSE OF EXCESSIVE SPAM) My plan actually will be expiring there soon, so I guess this is good timing. Quote
Lianna Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Expiration Date:13-Feb-2004 21:13:23 UTC It appears that your domain registration is also expiring soon. You should contact the registrar or registering agent as soon as possible and ensure that the domain is paid for, even if dropping your hosting package with them...those are two exclusively different items. Most registrars will not allow you to transfer your domain within 30 or 60 days of a renewal/expiration. So the current host is who you need to contact. If that email address is correct for contacting YOU, then it appears you should not have any issues. To avoid the 'child's-play', I might suggest contacting the host and requesting the renewal of the domain and then once that's done and you have access to change the name servers to TCH, THEN tell them you'll be cancelling your hosting account. TCH-Dick Posted January 26, 2004 Posted January 26, 2004 Thought I would throw my 2 cents in here. PHPNuke is available as a one click install on all of our plans, BUT it is version 6.0. Version 6.9 is the current public version and has a lot of fixes. I would suggest downloading Nuke and installing it yourself, it isnt that hard plus it gives you more of an idea of how things work. I have 5 sites here, 4 of which are nuke sites so if you need a hand just ask here on the forums, like Lianna said PHPNuke is a 3rd party script so it isnt supported by the TCH staff, but asking on the forums usually results in quick help. andypeat Posted January 27, 2004 Posted January 27, 2004 I'm sure I saw a quick 'how-to' for PHP-nuke on these pages a few days ago, do you know where I can find them as I was going to try installing Nuke 6.9 very soon. thanks. Andy Quote
