vangrieg Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 Subj. I have tons of images on my site, and tried to set expiration time in .htaccess, but it doesn't work, and phpinfo() shows that this module is not installed. Without such directives, there's just too much traffic wasted. Any advice on what I should do? Quote
Lianna Posted January 16, 2004 Posted January 16, 2004 If you'd like a moduyle installed, you may submit a help desk support ticket with the request. There it will be evaluated and reponded to by the Technical Staff. Quote
vangrieg Posted January 17, 2004 Author Posted January 17, 2004 Wow. I did submit a help desk support ticket, and 40 minutes later mod_expires was installed on my server. Am I dreaming or is this real??? Rock Sign Quote
natimage Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 Vangrieg, Could I borrow somemore of your time today and ask you to fill me in on what the heck "mod_expires" is? How do you use it and for what purpose? Thanks!!! Quote
vangrieg Posted January 17, 2004 Author Posted January 17, 2004 Hey, did my previous advice help? Basically, mod_expires is an Apache module that allows to tell browsers not to bother checking if the files have been modified or not until a certain date. Quote
natimage Posted January 17, 2004 Posted January 17, 2004 Yes, Vangrieg. The previous advice was helpful in giving me a better grasp on permissions and such!! I appreciate your time. Is the mod_expires very difficult to get a handle on? I too have a lot of images on one of my sites. I don't have to worry about my bandwidth right now, but I hope to someday!!! Thanks again!! Quote
vangrieg Posted January 17, 2004 Author Posted January 17, 2004 Is the mod_expires very difficult to get a handle on? No, it's not. It's probably the simplest of all Apache modules and doesn't require any special knowledge, except that you should know that a .jpg has the type of image/jpeg, .gif - image/gif, png - image/png. http://httpd.apache.org/docs-2.0/mod/mod_expires.html Don't ask me about mod_rewrite, that one is difficult.
