toddcurry Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 Is it possible (for us or for TCH) to install one of the open-source challenge/response tools out there for better spam control? Three options: - TMDA - Active Spam KillerActive Spam Killer - TMDA Plugin for Squirrel Mail (note, the folks at sqmail say: TMDA is the best spam-gate available!) These are user configurable, widely supported and *work*. thoughts? Thanks Quote
borfast Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 I was looking at the TMDA and it's SQMail plugin and it looks very interesting! I would certainly like to see this installed by default on TCH servers. Still, you can also install it yourself directly on your account, if you wish. But I would still prefer to have it installed by default Quote
toddcurry Posted December 18, 2003 Author Posted December 18, 2003 Raul, At a minimum, one would need ssh access to install these. I have that, but not everyone does... I agree, though: it would be ideal to have these installed on TCH servers! Very configurable AND it would reduce bandwidth for TCH and their users as only whitelist email would be downloaded! Might even save us both money. Thanks, TC Quote
borfast Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 SSH access is needed? Oh darn Well, maybe Bill will indulge us all (and TCH itself) with a little christmas present... Quote
DarqFlare Posted December 18, 2003 Posted December 18, 2003 Would that SQMail addition also help when accessing via POP3 using Outlook? Quote
toddcurry Posted December 20, 2003 Author Posted December 20, 2003 SSH access is needed? Oh darn Well, maybe Bill will indulge us all (and TCH itself) with a little christmas present... I've been trying to get ASK to work, as it is the less involved to set up. And, well, it hasn't been easy. Looks like it might require python 2.2 (I think we're at 1.51?). And then it looks like our Cpanel puts forwarding addresses in a different place than other veersions of Cpanel (or I just can't find a football in a bucket). So anyone else wanna help try one of these out? Where's Rayners when you need him?.... Darq, these work at the server level, so they'd screen out your spam before you hit send/receive in Outlook. And email from distant relatives. But only the latter will bother taking the extra step to confirm so to get their message through. See mailblocks.com for a good explanation of a similar server-based solution. I'm trying to use some freeware to do same kind of thing here on the TCH servers. TC Quote
TCH-Dick Posted December 20, 2003 Posted December 20, 2003 Just so no one thinks we are trying to avoid this topic, it has been discussed, and has been considered in the past, but heres why it hasnt been implemented. If we add something to the servers it does add one more thing to support. When CPanel is updated it adds some features but there are also the ineviditable bugs. When we have something added that is not a part of CPanel such as the installation of SquirrelMail over port 80 we have to take care of any problems that may arise due to conflicts. Not to mention there are many more servers now than there were just a few months ago and updating all the servers is not an easy task. We provide lots of options already and we look for other options as well. From a tech support standpoint that is difficult. Some folks love NeoMail while others want Horde. Cpanel lets you set up your own forwarders and mail filters but that also means that if you set them up incorrectly you can break your email. Adding options increases the number of things to support and we have to weigh that against the benefits. We take suggestions from the family very seriously, but we have to look at it from all angles and then decide what to do with it. Quote
