My current (cpanel-based) host has just done this :

We have banned "Movable Type" blogging software on our shared servers because of resource issues. This script takes at least 90% of the available web server resources when running, thus slowing down the machine for other users.
and this
as of 8th November 2003 we will be disabling "Mailman mailing list software" on all servers. It is simply getting out of hand and cPanel is offering no help on this. The mailman processes just start using all of the CPU for hours and end with 50+ of them open and we cannot allow this to continue any further.

They seem to be completely incompetent - their way of solving problems is to ban or disable the facility with no notice and concern whatsoever for customers - even if like mailman it's a standard part of cpanel.

So, I'm now looking for a less clueless host. Any danger of this sort of thing happening here if I move?

 Welcome

Not only is Movable Type allowed,

we have instructions on how to install it.

And you will find quite a few family members using it,

so if you need help, just ask.

Mailman is still part of cpanel, and again lots of the family have experiance with it.

I think, not only will you find the severs up to the task of running these programs,

but also very dependable.

And of course there is this wonderful forum

where you can get the lastest news

and help from your family Rock Sign

futureweaver,

Regarding dropped features:

In over a year that I've been at TCH, I have seen only one function disabled, formmail. Formmail was disabled for security reasons (known issues with exploits of formmail) and not because of server loads.

TCH used to offer 3 stats packages but limited that to one, AWStats, after taking a poll and input from the user community right here on these forums.

But that's it.

Hope you join the family!

Thx. That's alright :

- There are plenty of more-secure alternatives to the original formmail.

- The cpanel stats packages are all pretty lame. Perhaps AWstats is the best, but if I wanted anything useful I'd process the raw log through an external analyzer.

Apparently TCH dropped shell access too - I'm just surprised they had it in the first place.

Right now I live on MT and mailman, the only restrictions tend to be on very large mail groups. Other than that your golden. The best part of TCH is the people and the quick support they provide.
