surefire Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 My sites listed in dmoz.org (ODP) don't always show up in the Google directory. Yet, when I hit Submit a Site link it goes to the dmoz page for submitting a site. Is there a step I missed? the site has been in dmoz for a long time now. Quote
mtimmer Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 Hello Surefire, As far as I know, DMOZ and Google are linked, but you should be able to submit to the Google directories: http://www.google.co.uk/addurl.html. Quote
SEO Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 I have always found it best not to submit directly to Google. Rather get indexed via an indexed page linking to your site. The Google dmoz connection is several fold. The 'core' index Google uses is dmoz's index. In addition, when you look at a search engine ranking page from Google you will see the listing shows the page Title, then it usually shows the Meta Description contents and then it gives a 'Description'. The 'Description' used is the one that was created by dmoz when the site was included within their index. These two factors (plus an actual 'category' contribution) are why dmoz is important. Quote
TCH-JimE Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 Hi, My DMOZ was incorrectly done and I emailed them about it and two weeks later they have fixed it and even updated it. Nice people over there Jim Quote

I know... but what I was referring to was the directory. Thanks for all the info guys, but I'm still scratching my head wondering why the Google directory doesn't show my site but dmoz does. Quote
SEO Posted August 14, 2003 Posted August 14, 2003 Jack: I may be confused by your confusion... When I look at the site in question, I see that you are in the Google index Google Directory The site is indeed indexed. You have a PageRank and recorded backlinks. Your description in your Google listing is the one dmoz gave you when you were included in their index. All looks fine from my end... we could do some optimization to get higher rank but what you have is good. Am I not understanding your question? Quote
surefire Posted August 14, 2003 Author Posted August 14, 2003 Okay... I don't think I'm explaining this well... I know I'm in dmoz. I know I'm indexed by Google... but I'm not in their directory listing, as far as I can tell. The googlebot knows my site well... it's just that I can't find my site in the directory of google, even though it's in dmoz. I thought the Google directory was a mirror image of dmoz. Am I making sense? Quote
SEO Posted August 15, 2003 Posted August 15, 2003 I understand what you are saying and I could have sworn that you were... that is why I put in the 'Google Directory' link. I just looked and you are not there. This might be a bit strange but it might be do to the fact that you entered the index at a time when not all screws were tight (Google's). Let us wait (I know you have been), for just a bit longer and see if you 'appear' for good after this update. Google does 'think' you are there, I mean they list you as being there! Quote
surefire Posted August 15, 2003 Author Posted August 15, 2003 Okay... thanks for checking. I'll do my best to be patient. My concern is that I've been in dmoz for months... but you're the seo guy. I'll wait a while and if nothing, I'll ask for your opinion on what to do next. Quote
