I'm trying to set up some CGI scripts and changing permissions on lots of files via Cpanel is tedious at best. Would like to get to a shell I can just chmod. Is that possible?

I tried the link on the control panel that says SSH but though it prompts me for username/password (twice) I never get a terminal window.

Any advice pls?

Tks.

I like Total Commander

Features in Total Commander 5.5 now include :

Two file windows side by side

Multiple language support

Enhanced search function

Compare files / synchronize directories

Quick View panel with bitmap display

ZIP, ARJ, LZH, RAR, UC2, TAR, GZ, CAB, ACE archive handling + plugins

Built-in FTP client with FXP (server to server) and HTTP proxy support

Parallel port link, multi-rename tool

New: File descriptions, RTF viewer, file system plugins

And many more!

Using ftp is easy, and it's just $28 to register.

I've had it since windows 3.11, and my key is still good, even though it has gone through 5 major versions. And it supports more than 30 languages.

If I had to choose just one program, this would be it.turtlesmiley.gif

I go with SmartFTP.

I have been using it for many years.

I love it, and yikes... Its Free.

I had a customer concern the other day with cuteFTP. It wasnt allowing them to see the .htaccess files. It turned out that cuteFTP hides the hiddens files just like it should. A trip to their website and a few minuted later it was fixed. I have to say I was impressed with their website.

Bill,

With Cute FTP to display hidden files per the help files bundled with the product:

·          Displaying Hidden Files: You can display hidden files on servers using a special filter command.  When configuring your filter, select Enable remote filters (Server applied filter).  Type in -rtaF next to this field. Your listing command should now be LIST-rtaF, which will display of hidden files.

...and yes, it should hide the hidden unless the user specifically knows how/ needs to view it. IMHO

Thanks everybody; I didn't know ftp programs could do this (I've only used the "dos" command line version before...). Anyway the first suggestion worked fine for me -- smartFTP and I got the job done. I had the problem with the hidden files too but looking at their faq I found the option to turn on display of hidden files which is a tick box on the command/connection/listoptions menu.

Well my scripts are up and running fine now -- problem I now have is that I can't find a smooth way to get this to publishing to coexist happily with this. Problem is that the scripts create data files -- but then when I publish from Front Page it sees these "extra" files and removes them. I tried copying the files from the server into my local copy -- but all that means is that whenever I publish it copies the (old) verson from my PC to the server overwriting any new data on the server. :D

I realize FrontPage is not that bright and considered switching to something else but surely this is a generic problem, I've used Dreamweaver before and when it "puts" the site it'll overwrite too.

Any suggestions on how to avoid this? I presume its a typical need, to maintain your offline editor with "publish" or synchronise capability, but not to mess with cgi create data files.
